@Rainman said in Minneapolis: @Loki said in Minneapolis: Gov Walz today in mobilizing the full national guard, said 20% of the protesters are local and 80% are out of town. Did they self identify, or was there a sign-in sheet somewhere? Don't tell me the cops just demanded to see ID. No, in all the video I've seen, there has not been one example of a cop asking for ID, or a cop asking, "hey, where ya'll from, bud?" Couldn't be that Gov. Walz just made up his facts. Looks like he inverted the numbers from the arrests. 80% of those arrested were local and 20% from out of town.

@Horace said in Futures are .... up?!?: Rioters probably buy just as many iPhones as anybody else, I mean if they're not stealing them. Well, if there is anything I've learned about the riots, it's that good cellphone cameras are required.

@Rainman said in Steinway Dealer in Philadelphia was hit by “protesters”: Well, I'm projecting Portland in part of the above. Everyone I know in my area, steers clear of downtown Portland, as it has gotten increasingly worse over the past several years. It's almost guaranteed you will be hassled by the street people, and it's not safe. I was in Portland, for the first time, in 2015, when I stayed in the Pearl District. I loved the city. It was clean, walkable, and I never felt unsafe. I was there last in 2018 and it was amazing how different it was, and I just walked from Union Station to the car-rental place on Pine, about half a mile. It was a bit creepy.

Good analysis, @Aqua-Letifer @Mik yeah I was thinking earlier how this distraction probably helps Trump. And could galvanize his base a bit.

I think reason called it in about 36 hours ago. This is all what-the-fuck-ever until either people get bored after a few days, or the pot gets stirred again.

When you live in a society that can't really agree whether these mass riots are justified, the sane person stays home. What a colossal joke all this is, and an indictment of our species.

I actually didn't expect the virus to drastically disrupt the long term profit trajectories of many publicly traded companies, so even though I'm surprised the recovery of the market has been this strong, I am only surprised because I figured the irrational fear of the stock market would last longer than it has. To answer the question in the thread title, the stock market is to provide a system whereby a company can borrow money and pay back those loans, where the lender is individual investors and all their investment dollars in aggregate. If you agree that it's good for a company to be able to borrow money from average joes in order to invest in growth and allow those average joes to participate in the future profits, then the stock market is just the logical consequence of such a system.

@Mik said in Coronavirus May Be a Blood Vessel Disease: So glad to hear she is recovering. Sad to hear that as I suspected we will find there is lingering, possibly permanent, damage. +1 to all this, Jolly.
