When does all this apply to China? Or do we talk about C02 per individual all day long and continue to give them competitive advantage until they rule the world economy? Oh and we will sweep human rights under the carpet because that is not something nation states have any right to meddle?

That study seems to (so far) have steered clear of the possibility to let chance decide — e.g., just throw a virtual dice and let a pseudo-random number generator decide. I suspect an option like this will appeal to the religious/spiritual people, or generally people who believe that this is such things as “fate” or some “higher power”. Moreover, for systems dealing with inherently hard-to-decide problems where the notion of “fairness” is hard to define precisely yet the sentiment for “fairness” is still highly desirable, deliberately introducing randomness can resolve a lot of issues.

That is one of the main criticisms of the education system in asia. In asia, they teach you to follow, not to question.

They don't even bother saying single or unmarried anymore. Remember when BLM had destruction of the nuclear family on their list of goals? I the goal it went away because they realized the mission was accomplished.

@jon-nyc said in NY Opens up vaccines: Anyone over 30 starting tomorrow. Anyone 16+ starting a week from tomorrow. So much inequality with industrious people getting to the front of the line because it takes resilience to find a vaccine. Proud of NY but not sure why the woke aren’t screMing bloody murder. Would love to see vaccinated percent by zip code. I could be wrong.

@copper said in 365 Gigapixels: Super Bowl 53 Something exciting happened football-wise that I just gotta talk about. Because I don't want to hijack the thread -- something I hardly ever do -- I'll spoil the rest. ::: The most amazing coincidence. I was reading Sherman and Wedge's book 12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption, and it told in great detail -- five chapters worth! -- what happened in Superbowl LI. Man alive, it was the most exciting thing I've ever redd in nonfiction. You couldn't have pried me away with a crowbar. This was yesterday. Found out this very morning that I redd it on the anniversary of that incredible game. Was that like kismet or what??? Dang, I envy the people who were there to witness that game. :::

@lufins-dad said in LOLWut?: I can not comprehend anybody complaining about this. First, I wasn't complaining about transportation. I was complaining about the digitalizing. Second, I wasn't complaining about waste but about the timing. But as George pointed out, the project was approved far earlier than the doing of it, so I could've been out about that.

@xenon said in Too Colonial.: Super interesting that "memsahib" is a mainstream(ish) British term. It's not really, now. Back in the 1950's, maybe. And possibly in whatever gentleman's club the editor of the Daily Telegraph spends his Wednesday evenings.

The British approach of giving almost everybody the first vaccination, even it means delaying the booster, seems to have worked, at least for now.

@loki said in As seen on another board...: @catseye3 said in As seen on another board...: Think what this means, though. "Wife liberal, husband conservative" could be a kind of shorthand for widespread differences in viewpoints beyond politics. I would hope so, since your political beliefs are curated, sent to you and exposed to you based on some AI and those messages are radicalized to get you to click and look at ads. To think people think very little anymore, just constant indoctrination. Religions and the Khmer Rouge re-education camps move over. Those prone to emotional thinking are also prone to believe based on the anecdotes they are fed. Those prone to logical thinking might first consider that this is an anecdote, and why am I aware of it? The emotional thinkers never get past their initial response to the anecdote. Then they gang up, take control of the cultural messaging, and ostracize the thinkers.
