I remember once on Sky King, Sky said over the radio that everything was OK, just like a day in May. The guys on the ground recognized that he was secretly calling Mayday! Sky was really clever. This show went off the air in 1959, so that was a long time ago.

Huh...., I seem to remember back several years ago when I cited some climate scientists who explained why "man made global warming" was nonsense, that I was told in no uncertain terms that only peer reviewed writings could be believed. It was the gold standard I was told.... now the same one who told me that is saying peer reviewed is meaningless..... How very interesting....

@mark said in Goldfish are invasive and resilient: Sorry for all the Talapia hate. lol All good man, I'm not at all a tilapia fan anyway; yep, fully aware of the B.S. surrounding the industry. (That's why I find it funny they offer weekly tilapia specials; not touching that shit, that's for sure!) Also, I don't care what hard-working, indigenous, man-of-the-sea source you have for your seafood, but around here at least, it's very hard not to have a high mercury content. Best to be eaten sparingly.

@george-k said in Campbell on embedded media myths (Watergate): “To say that the press brought down Nixon, that’s horseshit.” They certainly contributed. Maybe not just Bernstein and Woodward, but a lot of others stuck to the story. The same break-in during the Biden campaign would have had no effect at all.

I did actually root for England. They were clearly better in the first half. But the penalty shootout strategy was just terrible. Who the hell told them to attempt these circus tricks that don't work?

I would like to have a better understanding of the sorts of squabbles these Chicagoans are dying over. The media is not exactly all over the particulars of these sorts of stories.

@horace said in Russia, China, and Iran Are All Screwed: Western progressivism is loathe to find enemies outside their own borders. It sniffs of xenophobia. Plenty of enemies within the society they come from - the other political side. Those people who, culturally, are more similar to them than any other people on the planet. They are the evil ones. There's no need for other forcers of evil to message against. So true. How you can be woke and be indifferent to the horrors that go on in other countries is still very very confusing to me.

@horace said in The Tomorrow War: @doctor-phibes said in The Tomorrow War: I really hope they do a good job with the LoTR universe - I've been a big Tolkien fan since I was 10. It would be very easy to make a mess of it. I wonder if they'll follow any canonical story. The characters or plot lines don't need to come from any canon, they just need to avoid contradicting canon. They should have a fair amount of freedom, as it's set in The Second Age. Presumably they'll dip into the Silmarillion for ideas - there's a ton of potential material in there.

@aqua-letifer said in American Thinker du jour...: @horace said in American Thinker du jour...: How much of politics comes down to those who pay taxes vs those who want the taxes of others to support them? MMT will be tested more and more as demographics dictate that the takers, with their useless degrees, useless or non-existent jobs, low salaries, and low tax burdens, inexorably outweigh the providers. Better hope America can squeeze enough out of Gates and Bezos. The actual economic contributions from both groups isn't as clear cut as that. I'm not saying economics dictate votes. Even if they did, tribalists won't give an inch about whether one side is better than the other. (Have you heard that the economy does better under Democrat presidents than Republican presidents? If you haven't heard that, feel free to skim any conversation in any forum anywhere online. That factoid will be mentioned within the first three responses. Thus, anybody who has an issue with MMT inspired Democrat economic plans, is simply ignorant.)
