Descending into geezer mode. In 1986 (?) a colleague loaned me his Macintosh computer. It was, I think, the "fat Mac" - the all-in-one 9-inch black and white display Mac. It was very similar to the Mac that Steve Jobs introduced in 1984. When he let me play with it for a weekend at my house, he told me that he was saving up for the Apple Laserwriter. @doctor-phibes said in The Chinese Defector: The sad thing is that people go to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for their news. However, if you look at the state of the 'serious' news programs, you can see why. And to add to your point the only news is was Stewart kidding the WaPo saying celebrities shouldn’t be experts- cofeve everywhere.

@loki said in Doordash vs. Direct: All the start ups are losing money like crazy, let’s just say that the prices we get are subsidized by investors. That era is over. There are increasing volumes of articles about millennials who have built a lifestyle around free news, cheap Uber, cheap Airbnb whatever…. And now the costs are spiraling up to the actual cost once all the middlemen are paid off. I think at the end of the process which is still a problem as George pointed out…. Is that labor and middlemen are expensive and all the anomalies will sort out and the inherit less cost of you going direct or picking up the stuff yourself will be reflected in what you pay. In a vacuum, that's true of a lot of things. But what happens when those companies run out of investor money is that they simply go under. In the case of Doordash, Grubhub, etc., COVID was an absolute boon to their businesses. I suspect they'll be fine, and prices aren't going to spike all that much. Especially when the smart restaurants are hitting back with more unique ways of staying in business.

@axtremus said in Biden approval drops - disillusionment: https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/putin-polls-higher-than-biden-among-trump-voters-114976837699 Putin polls higher than Biden among Trump voters. Hahaha. And the same poll says Democrats think Russia is a bigger problem than China! can you believe that? so lets look closely at ALL the poll findings. Of course MSNBC would stop looking as soon as they found their red herring. https://today.yougov.com/topics/international/articles-reports/2021/06/17/americans-see-china-biggest-threat-united-states-n

@jon-nyc said in Vivaldi Recomposed: Yeah. I think it was Schumann that said “Did Vivaldi compose 200 violin concerti? Or did he compose one violin concerto 200 times?” Same has been said about Bruckner's symphonies. Astor Piazzola has done a take on the 4 Seasons as well. It's very much Piazzola (whom I love), with only a few allusions to Vivaldi, but it's fun nevertheless. Here's the version for piano trio. Link to video I saw Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg do this with the Madison Symphony about 12 years ago - she broke a string during her performance.
