@89th said in Cover Charges: Dude, do you have any idea how hard a cop's job is? This. Things happen for police man so so fast. It is easy to break down a video one/ten of a second at a time and second guess. Somebody here, maybe Jolly posted a video where they had a "anti-police" activist be put in various "staged" scenarios that police see all the time. He came out of the exercise with a new perspective and appreciation of the work that police do.

Happy New Year! It's 16F with a "real feel" of 4F dropping to 10F and -2F tonight.

Ive had all 3 vaccine shots. No one forced me to take them, i did it by choice. But the day someone tells me i have to carry a card or some other form of proof of that before i can go somewhere is the day i start kicking asses. And i feel sorry for those who dont understand why.

@mik said in The Cube Rule of Food: A hot dog taco could be really good. Especially with Cincy chili. With kraut or maybe some fried peppers and onions! And hot sauce instead of ketchup. I'd eat the CRAP out of that (and probably crap the crap out of it, too).

@george-k said in Anyone have Misen pans?: I was just about to invest in some stainless (don't want to spend the $$ for All-Clad) so this will be interesting.... Our Kirkland 5-Ply Clad has been great. $100 less than the Cuisanart, too…

BTW, price is going up, but one of these would make a nice second car: https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-when-2023-ford-maverick-orders-will-begin FWD, but it's not a new engine/transmission combo. Same as the Ford escape with a longer body.

@Improviso @Copper @Catseye3 and I had an interesting redistricting. The “bipartisan” commission’s map was thrown out and a new one put in that is kind of beneficial to Republicans. It moved moderate Dem’s Abigail Spanberger’s district out of Suburban Richmond and more into Red Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties. She likely won’t survive. It also moved Liberal Dem (and my rep) Jennifer Wexton’s district a little more into competitive territory. She’s still a likely winner, but it will be competitive.

@jolly said in My three kids on New Year's Eve: Do I detect just a gleam in Mr. Coon Cat's eye as he looks at Sidney? Actually, Sid would win that one. Boris has some VERY healthy respect for Sidney. I was surprised to see Maggie and him getting along so well. They were actually closer, but I didn't have a chance to grab my phone in time (hence the blurriness). [image: 1641047749671-img_1125-copy.jpeg] [image: 1641047749645-img_1123-copy.jpeg]

SOLUTION: It makes sense to use the counter to keep track of how well the name currently in memory is doing. Then, whenever that name is heard again, you can increment the counter; when some other name is heard, you must decrement it. The counter begins at 0; if it ever threatens to dip below zero, the current name in memory is replaced by the name being heard, and the counter is incremented from 0 to 1. This may seem a bit dubious at first, because the new name you are putting into the counter may be the first occurrence of that name, while in the meantime your previous name (and other names) may have occurred many times. For example, if the list were "Alice, Bob, Alice, Bob, Alice, Bob, Charlie," Alice's name would remain in your memory until the end when Charlie becomes your nominee. But that's OK, since no name has a majority. If a name does occur more than half the time, it's guaranteed to be the one in your memory at the end. Why? Suppose the majority name is Mary, and assume (for convenience) that a name is heard every minute. Divide time into intervals during which the same name remains in memory. Then each interval except possibly the last is an even number of minutes in length, and its memory-name was heard exactly half the time during the interval. It follows that Mary's name is heard at most half the time within every interval except the last, therefore more than half the time in the last interval — which must therefore end with Mary's name in memory. Here's an example: Suppose the name list is A, M, A, M, M, A, B, B, M, M, A, M, M, B, M. Then the intervals are of length 4 (with "A" in memory), 2 (with "M"), 4 (with "B"), 2 (with "A" again), and finally 3 (with "M"), the counter ending at value 1.
