Worry not, a genetically manipulated raccoon can probably live many years longer.

See them a lot up here especially late autumn. But they can appear any season. Have seen some spectacular shows over the years a couple not unlike that photo from Alaska.

@George-K said in Hey SciFi guys: @Aqua-Letifer said in Hey SciFi guys: So did the book. Everything the most recent movie covered was slow-as-hell reading. But that was the point. Herbert planted the suspense early on, so the quiet development only adds to that. Dune ain't Star Wars. Bingo... I've read "Dune" three times, the first time in the early 1980s. It's slow as hell, until it's not. But, I really had a hard time with the later sequels. Too much mysticism and weirdo crap. As someone who enjoys "hard" sci-fi, I've enjoyed the prequels written by Brian Herbert and Anderson. No question, they're much more "pop-corner" than Franks' story. But they're not as pop-corney as Star Wars, and they do a credible (if not always great) job of setting the stage for what Frank envisioned: The Bene Gesiret, The Spacing Guild, the backstory of Atreides and Harkonnen. I love Dune. Right now, I'm reading the graphic novel version Brian Herbert did on the original book. Tons of fun.

I agree, especially when used for fuel. I am a big supporter of agriculture in general, but it is slowly necessary to move in a different direction for ethanol being added to fuel. There is a lot of interesting stuff being done with "biomass" for fuel. For example, corn husks, etc. And one big advantage of making biofuel from that is that it does not require a separate pipeline, etc. It can blend directly with regular fuel. Don't even need to blend it with regular fuel for biodiesel. Problem is the break-even point. Used to be around $75/barrel, but that was a few years ago. @Jolly said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @taiwan_girl said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @George-K said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: the whole ethanol thing is stupid. Bio fuel is a tough economic situation when oil prices are low. For example, Thailand had a mandate for 10% bio fuel in the fuel area. That has been changed to 7% and is now been lowered to 5% for the time being. But costs for production of biofuels are coming down all the time. Sewage. Think about it. @Jolly said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @taiwan_girl said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @Jolly said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @taiwan_girl said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: @George-K said in Ethanol-addicted Republicans tank McCarthy plan: the whole ethanol thing is stupid. Yeah, I think that is a great idea. In SE Asia, palm oil or jatropa oil is big as the feed for biofuel. It was becoming such a problem that Thailand has require that feed for biofuel cannot come from "things" that have replaced human food plots. In other words, companies cannot plant acre and acre of palm trees for biofuel if it replaced rice fields.

@Copper said in 673: It is time to fire every college professor in the country. We did it with Air Traffic Controllers. It would be worth the hassle. I worked a side hustle as an adjunct for ten years. In many departments you could can every other one and never miss a beat. I think we need to change the tax code back to what it used to be, regarding housing. I think preachers and professors should not be taxed on housing. I also think that any professor's children and his spouse, should receive free tuition and fees at the university where he teaches. I also think we need to take a looong look at at exactly how industrial, government and university research is linked. And I think we need to take a very hard look at the cost of public university tutition, how basic courses are delivered and how testing is done. I think a canned course is fine for most 200 level courses and lower, if access is granted for student questions and testing is monitored.

@George-K said in When trains are too long ...: @Axtremus said in When trains are too long ...: You miss the part about rail roads falling under federal jurisdiction. The local governments are powerless in many cases. If a train obstructs a crossing for a prolonged period of time, the municipality has the authority to ticket or fine the railroad. The article talks about a federal court decision that curtailed municipalities’ power to issue tickets to railroad companies.

@George-K The only people who pay attention to what Trudeau says are foreigners and rural Albertans who don’t know any better. As a country we have moved past the pandemic and care little or nothing for what was or wasn’t federally mandated at the time. In any case, the vast majority of vaccine mandates were declared and enforced at the level of provincial governments. The federal government has very limited constitutional authority over public health measures in the country.

@Horace said in If your mother is crazy...: @Jolly said in If your mother is crazy...: There's always some kind of social silliness, just sometimes it's worse than others. What we do have today, is a ten-foot wide pipeline of information and people who probably know less immutable Truths than at most times in history. So they grab onto whatever plank floats by in the torrent, hoping they've found enlightenment, when all they've found is just another piece of wood. A psychologist named Jonathan Haidt, who is far to the left of Jordan Peterson, but still heterodox, has been studying this through his career. His career has coincidentally overlapped with the advent of the internet and social media. Women's mental health is more adversely affected by social media than men's mental health. The feminization of the institutions we're watching, is a feminization of females who've been raised on social media. These are not your parents' females.
