A freighter is stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking hundreds of ships.

The freighter is carrying a huge supply of components for electronics and automobile manufacturing. These supplies are already at critically low levels due to excessive demand and vastly reduced production levels due to COVID-19. On top of that, one of the primary manufacturing facilities of these components in Japan suffered a devastating fire a week back.

The freighter is also blocking oil tankers, causing fluctuations and problems in the oil and plastics market.

Speaking of plastics, several automotive parts manufacturers have had to shut down because of the whole Houston freezing thing.

All of this is happening at a point where international freight is overwhelmed. I have a piano sitting in Vienna waiting for the next available spot in a plane coming to Baltimore or Dulles. It’s been sitting for 2 weeks and we are told it’s likely going to be another 2 weeks before it ships. The system is overtaxed.

It wouldn’t take much to tip everything into chaos at this point...

Rumor is it will be cleared by tomorrow so it’s a two day loss if true. Surprised this may be the first.

Iran is likely taking note. Why not jus bomb the canal? That’s impact.

And pisses the entire developed world off. Nah. I don't think that is on their mind. They may seem ridiculous, but they are cagey bastards.

2-3 day loss spreads out to being 6-8 days by the time that you get to the ships at the end of the cue... Ships en route are being diverted to other canals knowing it will add a week or more on to their journeys.

And that 2-3 days severely impacts the manufacturers waiting for these components.

I wonder what the liability is for that ship owner and where jurisdiction is. Bet it’s a Byzantine nightmare.

I suppose there are a lot of industries weakened by the pandemic. It will take some time to work through the problems.

They're talking about removing some of the containers to lighten the ship so that it can be "unstuck."

                                    This is a BFD.

Unless the tug boats can’t get there, can’t they just have a shit load of ships attach ropes to this ship and pull it out? Clearly I’m a certified maritime captain.

I suspect it will take helicopters

                                          That captain’s career is shot.
