There have been a couple of recent forum posts and forum threads about religion and people who are saying they are religious.

What is the definition of a religious person?

Is it more actions, (the way you conduct yourself), or is it something you believe in.?

Example, someone can say they believe in a God, but then go rob a bank. Or someone can say they don’t believe in God, but they live a really good life.

I’m just curious as to what people think is a religious person.

If those two are separate things, you're just bullshitting.

Really, anyone who believes they are. What are you trying to accomplish by setting some definition?

Just seems that that term comes up a lot.

“He is a very religious person.” For example.

I think in common conversation using, it seems like it has applied more to if you believe in a God, rather than your actions.

          More just a curious question.

                  Hu?

It’s one of the main differences between Judaism and Christianity. For Jews, actions are more important than belief. For Christianity, it’s the other way around.

Many bookshelves full of books have been written about the difference. How can you say they are the same? Of course these are fundamentally separate things. They can coincide, but not necessarily so.

With regard to @taiwan_girl 's original question:

I guess in practice it is a question that is self-professed. One cannot really define such things precisely.

The definition is probably more about the person doing the defining than the person being defined.

For the new left a religious person is one thing.

For the old left it is something else.

But it's not even clear what "religion" is in the first place. Look how freely the term is applied. People will say, for instance, that some forms of environmentalism are a "religion".

For the purpose of applying the law there are probably many definitions of a religious person.

                            Pick the one that applies.

Fox holes and tax returns also have an effect on religious definitions.

Some people in more current contexts are defining anti-racism as a religion.

I’m just curious as to what people think is a religious person.

                                    Where is my bud Ax?
                                    He would know.

What is it that you're wanting to know - do you want to know God, or are you just interested in defining the word "religion"?

Yes, you did. And I pointed out that she made it abundantly clear what she was asking.
