It's very easy to go down the "decadeology" path here. Or "The 2030 Problem" - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1464018/
Some top comments from reddit on this topic btw include:
Boomers aging and dying is actually very unique. Since we are all from the post baby boom era we take for granted just how much of a population spike this was. This generation also has lived longer in higher numbers than previous generations. And our current birth rate is declining a lot.
All of this means that the increasing age and required medical and daily care that the baby boomers will require as they continue to get older definitely will put a strain on healthcare resources and also workforce balance. I imagine it will mean a lot of economic consequences. The oldest boomers are only 78
we are going to have way more older, retired, people in need of medical care than ever before in a few years
It depends on the nation.some nations like Japan, will face an absolute demographic collapse. The US though will face some different challenges.
Currently boomers own 40% of all single family homes. As they die those homes will be sold, inherited and lived in by the individual who inherited it or be rented out. This will have a massive deflationary impact in those markets.
As those same boomers liquidate their 401ks, IRAs or treasuries to maintain the social status that will also have an impact on stocks, treasuries and commodity prices as money leaves the market.
Federal budget deficits will stop exploding and probably be manageable, if they don't get defaulted on in the mean time.
At the same time this is happening the rest of the world's population will implode outside Africa. Who can say what the economic or social implications there will be. But America, being as insular as we are, should weather the storm at least until the millennials pass. But so much could happen between then and now that's hard to calculate.

I’m sure that we can tax our way out of that….

I saw a statistic today that there are about twice as many 65+ year olds as there were in 2004 and about the same number of 18 year olds.
And, whatever you think of immigration, far fewer working age immigrants to help fill the gap.

Yeah there are some good (not) charts about ratio of workers to retirees. Short version, it was like 7 to 1 and now it's.... totally not. You're welcome for my technical analysis.

It's silly to think that artificial abortions cause population decline. If you want to blame the domestic population's low reproductive rate, blame family planning in general and the domestic population's unwillingness to raise more children. Getting rid of artificial abortions won't move the needle because a parent getting a child earlier than planned will simply change family planning tactics to not have the child that would have come later. It's a zero sum game in that regard.
Immigration is net population addition for the most part as very few domestic persons would change their family planning tactics in response to immigration.

Is there any way of bringing gay marriage into this discussion and hitting the trifecta?
-
When my parents started in 1958 they could raise 4 kids on one income. When I started in 1985 we could raise two kids on two salaries.
In 2025 my kids can barely raise one kid on two salaries.
And then politicians want young people to have more kids.
Ain't gonna happen. -

I’ve always thought you were gay despite the fact that you’re in a marriage with a woman.
Does that count?

Yes costs have gone up, but our level of consumption has also gone way up, it seems. Gone are the days of one car, one phone, one TV, one newspaper, one vacation.

I've always pictured him as a straight guy with a dress or two in the closet. (He's going to get pissed!

It's only gay if you actually enjoy it.
So, apparently I've had a bunch of gay girlfriends.
