Big loss.
My first memory of him was in The Apostle, great cast too (first time I saw Walton Goggins and Billy Bob Thornton, too). I'll post some great clips of that in a second. He was a local Virginia guy too, I think with farm land and rescuing dogs.
For acting, I always enjoyed his ability to have the right inflection (and the right pause) while giving his lines.
Always wanted to watch Lonesome Dove (TV series) one day...
This famous clip I remember studying in film class. There are a bunch of things to notice (including a young Martin Sheen at the end) but the delivery of his lines at the end (and NOT flinching when a mortar almost hits him) are classic.
