SF had to be brought to this crime enforcement measure kicking and screaming. This was a condition of some state funding, which they are in desperate need of.

They installed heavy duty gates that are difficult to get through without paying. Revenue up 15% or so, crime on BART down 40%, maintenance costs all but vanish. I can hear the lamentations of the SF leftists from here about how the gates prey on the poor.

The gates are quite democratic. They stop rich and poor alike from evading the fare.

The whole reason we call them illegal aliens is because they’re subject to our laws.

        Quite. Egalitarian, even.

Yeah, the "outliers" on both sides get the most press, but also are the source of most of the political problems that we have today.

I am not sure why people (leftist or otherwise) cannot see the obvious. People who do not pay to ride the subway are already committing a crime. Probably more likely that they will do an other crimes also.

Hours spent on patron related Corrective Maintenance (CM) within the paid area of stations reduced significantly after Next Generation Fare Gate (NGFG) installations. This data does not cover corrective maintenance on fare gates, but vandalism, graffiti, broken things, and unusual large clean ups. There was a 961-hour reduction in corrective maintenance hours related to this unwanted behavior in the 6 months post installation.

Ended up not taking it. We really had our hearts set on vandalizing the station but gave up when we realized we had to pay to enter. Also we rented a car.
