I needed to jump my car the other day. I have one of those portable jumper units. I connected the positive, and as soon as I connected the negative, opened the door, and the dome light came on. Great… Turned the ignition, it sparked from the battery, and then nothing. No juice at all… Any ideas what the problem might be? Blown fuse? Bad battery terminal?

Should not have sparked from the battery if it was connected properly. Check fuses first. Do you have a trickle charger with an amperage guage?

Check the fuse box for anything labeled MAIN, BATT, or IGN (usually large fuse)?

In any case is there a reason the battery went flat? Age? Lights left on? If the battery is relatively new and there is no apparent cause you might have an intermittent short somewhere (possibly in the ignition switch itself) that drains the battery. When you jumpered the system, the sudden jolt caused the spark and blew a fuse. In any case shorts like this can sometimes be difficult to locate without the proper diagnostic equipment.

              Is the starter blown?

No trickle charger, not really needed for our climate and our cars don’t normally sit long enough for a battery to drain.

The quick start charger has a gauge that shows the quality of the connection and it was solid green…

Funny, I just ordered a portable jumper this morning. Our Camry doesn't get driven much and it wore down.

The portable units you have to make sure they are fully charged before first use.

Is anyone else a little concerned that Renauda actually might be Jolly?

The jumper arrived today. POS didn't work so I ordered a more expensive high rated one. Grrrr.

@Mik , get the Hulkman Alpha85. I have used it to jumpstart compact car as well as minivan. I am quite confident that with one full charge I can jumpstart a Honda Odyssey three times over. And it holds a charge very well, starting from a full charge, I can go a year without recharging and still expect it to jumpstart a car. Compact too, using lithium ion battery.

Thanks, Ax. I'll look at it if this next one (highly reviewed in Popular Mechanics) turns out to be a dud.
