It can't be self-reported. I don't think I've ever met an American who didn't claim to be Irish.

I'm a bit skeptical about Rhode Island being predominantly Portuguese. According to https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/portuguese-population-by-state 7% of the population are Portugese.
