    Seen on X:

"Now look here, you Baltic gas passer... " - Mik, 6/14/08

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

          Latest on Tik Tok...

A fair number of Tik Tok users (several hundred thousand to date) have established accounts on the Chinese version of Tik Tok - to say FU to the US.

Mark Cuban has offered to back a Tik Tok-ish app if it is based on BlueSky.

Senator Markey is supposedly introducing legislation to delay implementation of the ban - to provide additional time for negotiation.

I don’t think its Chinese version of TikTok I think it’s another app called Red Book (as in Mao’s little red book) but branded RedNote in English.

Like I said, and I'm sure most agree, Tik Tok will just be replaced by another similar app, hopefully US-based.

I believe that you are right. In China, Tik Tok is called Douyin.

Not yet confirmed, but one Tik Tok influencer has said that as a result of the millions of US IP addresses, the Chinese have moved all US based IP addresses to separate servers. This allegedly has resulted in many US Chinese to lose the ability to share with their Chinese relatives. This same influencer is saying that there have been some reports of security issues - a couple of people report their phones were hacked including passwords.

He's not the only one. Trump urged it's banning before he didn't. There are a few members of congress on Tik Tok - who bounce which ever way seems most compelling.

Yes but Trump's flip-flop was purchased by major ByteDance investor Jeff Yass.

This senator is just afraid of some blowback. Rather, he wants something to point to in his next election. They had 270 days to negotiate.

Jeff Jackson of North Carolina became a bit of a Tik Tok celebrity - then voted for the ban - which turned him into the Lex Luther of Tik Tok.

                                          SCOTUS: Ban can proceed.

                                          https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/17/politics/tiktok-ban-supreme-court/index.html

The Supreme Court ruled Friday that a controversial ban on TikTok may take effect this weekend, rejecting an appeal from the popular app’s owners that claimed the ban violated the First Amendment.

The court handed down an unsigned opinion and there were no noted dissents.

The decision, which followed warnings from the Biden administration that the app posed a “grave” national security threat because of its ties to China, will allow the ban to start Sunday. But there are a lot of lingering questions about how the ban would work in practice because there’s no precedent for the US government blocking a major social media platform. And how exactly the government would enforce it remains unclear.

Americans may lose access to TikTok starting on Sunday, when a sell-or-ban law is set to take effect.

In its opinion, the Supreme Court acknowledged that for 170 million Americans TikTok offers “a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community.”

But the court said, Congress was focused on national security concerns and that, the court said, was a deciding factor in how it weighed the case.

“Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary,” the court wrote.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.
