Chomsky once said “I’m all for free speech but….” isn’t some middle ground. It’s how the anti-free speech side has always been expressed.
In woke times I loved pulling that out to lefties who wanted to ban

It's not a categorically wrong beginning of a sentence, as I think most people agree that free speech absolutism is incoherent with other commonly accepted rights. Of course as Bondi fumbled around about "hate speech", she was as wrong about that as the left always has been. And the mainstream right pundit class rejected it.

Yes one could phrase a prohibition of libel that way, for example. But Chomsky was referring to what we constantly saw among the woke left and, now that they have institutional power, the woke right. Namely a category of speech they find particularly offensive to them.

Now we're nitpicking rhetorical meaning of political rhetoric and whether the murderer ever uttered certain words in a certain order. This is peak rhetorical combat. Meanwhile, the politically motivated assassin subscribed to banal self-righteous hatred of the right, the likes of which can be consumed from any common source of left-wing punditry. The only thing fringe about him were his actions. His words were totally mainstream.

Joe Rogan has rushed to the defense of Jimmy Kimmel over the 'joke' that got him pulled from the air, while calling the Trump administration 'crazy' for going after the late-night host.
On his podcast Tuesday, Rogan slammed Kimmel's suspension over his comments about Charlie Kirk as an affront to free speech, warning that those who hailed the decision could face similar consequences.

The host also poked fun at Trump's reaction to the shooting.
