    The Editorial Board of WaPo:

In retrospect, Mr. Biden should not have sought reelection. The June 27 debate was worse than just a bad night, as the president maintained afterward. The 81-year-old had shown signs of slipping for a long time, but his inner circle worked to conceal his decline. He and the country would have been better off if Mr. Biden had kept his implied promise from the 2020 campaign to be a “transitional” figure, perhaps by bowing out after the Democrats’ surprisingly good showing in the 2022 midterm elections.

The rest is a hagiography of all his good features.

"Now look here, you Baltic gas passer... " - Mik, 6/14/08

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

You can scratch the ‘in retrospect’. I think it was known prospectively.

They’ll end up, after a lot of drama, with the same formula they use every time they have a trifecta: take away health care and food assistance from low income families and use the money to fund tax cuts for their donors.

I imagine there was a shit-ton of panicking going on behind Democrat closed doors for months, or most likely years.

I suspect there's a fair amount of panicking going on behind Republican closed doors as we speak.

Yes but in retrospect, the timing of Joe dropping out last month and anointing Kamala has so far been very rewarding for the left.

You think so? It has made me more likely to vote the other way. The GOP had a real primary but lived with the result. The cynicism and corruption of the Democrat party is blindingly obvious.

Why didn't The Resident do a national address, talk about his health and withdraw from the primaries, letting the Dems duke it out?

I think they would have had a stronger candidate.

If you look at the actual results of what 'duking it out' leads to, it might be worth questioning that conclusion.

Yeah I do think it's been perfect timing. Kamala is riding a short-term wave of enthusiasm, energy, youth, money, and a positive message... it'll last only 3-6 months, but just long enough to get her the win in November. I haven't paid attention but I'm sure they're using the Obama playbook (venerable images, "yes she can" slogans, pictures of everyone looking optimistically into the sunset talking about hope for the future...)

I'm not voting democrat, but the energy/positive message is on their side right now. Trump peaked after the bullet whizzed by his year (back when he was against Biden). Now Trump is the side of old man, old message, old insults, he's a convicted felon (like it or not) and his running mate was a bad pick (I think @LuFins-Dad called that one right away).

Considering the inordinate length of American election campaigns, there's got to be a suspicion that complaining about early voting is really just a prelude to Trump claiming the election was stolen again.

OK, but by that argument, it would be better to wait to vote until after the guy's been in power for a year.

Whether you allow early voting or not is completely arbitrary, as voters on both sides can do it. If somebody is ready to pull the lever why postpone it? Do you honestly believe the chance of Trump making some awful gaffe is any less likely?

You think so? It has made me more likely to vote the other way. The GOP had a real primary but lived with the result. The cynicism and corruption of the Democrat party is blindingly obvious.

I think it's too soon to say how this will play out. Trump could easily gain some initiative before November. I do think he's a shitty candidate, but that doesn't mean he'll lose.

Very true. My predictions have been very bad the last few years so it's probably wise to bet against me at this point!

Events can and do change elections.

What would have been the outcome the week after the assassination attempt?

Yes, but does it really matter whether somebody regrets their vote 2 weeks before the election, or for that matter 2 weeks after?

As long as everybody has the same opportunity, then it's a fair election.

                                      I was only joking

If you have a 60-day voting window, does everyone have the same opportunity?

As soon as the convention is over, the honeymoon is over. I’ve already seen several mainstream media outlets starting to complain about the lack of press conferences and interviews. She simply cannot go from August to October without some media interaction… She is sitting at her peak. She cannot go higher and has nowhere to go but down. The only chance she has is maintaining the enthusiasm for 12 weeks. That is unlikely.
