I heard they tried this during the 1918 Spanish Flu, but apparently not enough people opted in.
JUST KIDDING - although Apple and Google did work together back then, but they were called Whiskey and Fresh Air.

Let’s hope the security is top notch.
Imagine a hacker makes a small number of iOS/Android phone “think” that their owners are pandemic-of-the-day “positive,” and let the rest of the system precipitate a panic. -

You might give the virus to everyone in the Duchy of Grand Fenwick and make everyone think they are clean. That would be the end of Grand Fenwick.

I'll opt out of any alerts. I might be willing to let track in the abstract, but I don't need to know every time I was within 20 feet of somebody who was within 20 feet of someone that tested positive for COVID 2 weeks later. The tool is valuable for analytics and dangerous for hypochondriacs that need to get back to work.
