The president of California State University in Los Angeles declared that pro-Palestinian activists are no longer welcome on campus after a group of activists occupied last week the first four floors of a university building, causing significant damage and allegedly assaulting three employees and one student.

So long as the [Gaza Solidarity] Encampment remained non-violent, I was committed that the university would continue to talk,' California State University President Berenecea Johnson Eanes wrote after a group of activists occupied a university building, causing significant damage and allegedly assaulting three employees and one student

This coming weekend into next week is the European Respiratory Society meeting in Vienna. I’ll be able to spend quality time with my friend in Columbia leadership there. Can’t wait to hear some scoop about the president leaving.

There are few words to describe these morons.

Tweeter is congressman Richie Torres, was originally known as squad-adjacent like Bowman but came out super pro-Israel after 10:7. He’s from the Bronx. (Never got on my bill but will keep trying).

That makes me think Senator Torres doesn't want to free palestine.

You know, this is pretty mild compared to 1970.

                            True, that.

Remember Big Al? His wife was at Kent State in 1970 when all that went down.

I suspect many universities have no problem issuing permits.

Maybe they need to bring back something like Free Speech Alley that existed at LSU back in Carville's day. The alley was a space between two buildings, designated as a full free speech zone. As long as you didn't lay hands on somebody, scream in their face or use electronic sound enforcement, advocate for whatever you wanted. If you wanted to avoid the silliness, just avoid the area.

@Jolly I like it. Probably would require constant police on hand for inevitable physical altercations, but is a nice (real) example of free speech.... say what you want, just don't hurt someone physically (including excessive sound/visual weapons).

They almost always had campus police in the area. LSU campus police are not rent-a-cops. They go through the state police academy and have full arresting powers. So usually trouble got stopped before it started.

U.S. immigration agents arrested a Palestinian graduate student who has played a prominent role in pro-Palestinian protests at New York's Columbia University, the student workers' labor union said on Sunday.

The student, Mahmoud Khalil at the university's School of International and Public Affairs, was arrested by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents at his university residence on Saturday, the Student Workers of Columbia union said in a statement.

Khalil's detention appears to be one of the first efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican who returned to the White House in January, to fulfill his promise to seek the deportation of some foreign students involved in the pro-Palestinian protest movement. The Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and subsequent Israeli assault on Gaza have led to months of pro-Palestinian protests that have roiled U.S. college campuses.

Talked to my friend in leadership there last night. Apparently they were told if they sued they’d cut off student aid funds too. But they’re going to cooperate. They’re supposed to release a statement Wednesday (at least that was their plan as of yesterday).
