I believe the investigations were started a number of years ago and initiated by investigative journalists with Forbes, WaPo, NY Times, etc. Eventually this led to interest from the NY tax dept and the DA. And yes, if you spend years inflating your worth to make money (via lower interest rates) and then you decide to run for President, that puts your life and history in the spotlight. Aka... FAFO. Not to mention his behavior in 2020 after he lost... but the charges were already underway by then I believe.

If there was a crime, and he was charged even if others do the same thing and dont get charged, is that an excuse?
What if people are drink driving? "Hey, I saw three other people leave the bar over the drunk limit. Why dont you let me go?
(I know I know, apples vs. oranges. But the defense that "everybody does it", it is not a very good defense.)

As cute as that story is, it sort of misses the point, most of which is not legal but political.
- Has anyone ever been prosecuted for this crime?
- The DA ran on an agenda of targeting Trump - whom she claimed was guilty not only of being an (undefined) crook, but of being white.
- As a matter of right/wrong, is it right that you have to go bankrupt to defend yourself in court? If the stakes were smaller, would it be the right thing to take someone's house if he can't pay the fine while he appeals the judgment?

It's not that everybody does it, it's that AFAIK, nobody has ever been prosecuted just this way under this statute, and NOBODY has received a fine such as this.
Personally, I think it's unconstitutional.
I guess we'll find out.

If I ran for president you wouldn’t find much. Certainly not hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent profits. I doubt I’d find anything newsworthy on you either. Don’t attract the spotlight if you’ve done shady shit. If found, even if it was bill clinton in court today, I don’t have a problem with justice being served.

I’d imagine there have been countless of similar cases prosecuted for such type of fraud and ill gotten gains. Not sure where to search and find that info, though.
