Recent grad: I can make $50/hr in San Diego

Old fart: Yeah, but average rent for a 1BR apartment in San Diego is about $1400/month more than Baton Rouge. You can make $32/hr in Baton Rouge, and utilities and gas are cheaper.

Recent grad: Besides, California girls are hawt!

Old fart: Lad, have you looked at some of the girls down here?

So, at one point does it make sense for a young person to move across the country?

Many young people move across the country. Quite commonplace, nothing controversial about this.

Specifically comparing San Diego and Baton Rouge, the “old fart” seems to have neglected the natural disasters.

True. Southern Cal had a hurricane this year. Baton Rouge didn't.

Furthermore, also ain’t about how much money yuo make, is Louisiana’s abortion ban and attendant effects of women’s heath and reproductive care. Young people may place some weight on this “abortion ban” factor when deciding whether to “move across the country” when one of the locations under consideration is in Louisiana.

The comparison is San Diego specifically, not Southern California in general.

But I think Jolly's point is that higher salary doesn't guarantee a better life. You have to factor in many things.

There were a lot of good looking women around Morgan City, but on Mission Beach? Dayum, son... never seen anything like it.

                              2. Just because a place offers higher salaries/wages does not mean it is lacking in other measures. (Or, just because a place offers lower salaries/wages also do not mean it “wins” in other measures.)

Those girls on Mission Beach ain't going to look at you back if you aren't making $120K+

                                https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/baton-rouge-la/san-diego-ca/66560

A salary of $66,560 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana should increase to $116,426 in San Diego, California

That's not including taxes. On that $100K he makes in San Diego, the guy's going to pay $8500 in income tax vs $2400 for Baton Rouge.

Sales tax rate in Baton Rouge is 9.25% vs 8% in San Diego but goods typically cost 12% more in San Diego than Baton Rouge

                                https://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator/Louisiana-Baton-Rouge

Food & Grocery - Baton Rouge has grocery prices that are 0% higher than the national average.
Food & Grocery - San Diego has grocery prices that are 12% higher than the national average.

So on a $100 in groceries in Baton Rouge, you will add on $9.25 for tax or a total of $109.25. The same bag of groceries in San Diego will cost $112 + $8.96 tax for a total of $120.96.

Medical care looks to be much more expensive in California as well, so while an abortion may be available in California, it may not be financially feasible...

The point is that there can be many many wonderful reasons for a lad to choose to move to San Diego. The salary/money difference isn't one of them

Now, as to whether or not the women are better looking... I can't say.

I'm not sure abortion ranks high on the young man's quality of life considerations.

                                      1. Your opening post says “young person,” not just “young man.”

                                      2. A little research wouldn’t hurt. https://circle.tufts.edu/latest-research/abortion-election-how-youth-prioritized-and-voted-based-issues

                                      3. You really believe that where young women choose to go would not affect where young men choose to go?

Nephew dated a couple of girls on that dance line. I wouldn't exactly call them skanks...
