So, at one point does it make sense for a young person to move across the country?

Specifically comparing San Diego and Baton Rouge, the “old fart” seems to have neglected the natural disasters.

The comparison is San Diego specifically, not Southern California in general.

You're right, they'd most certainly want to move to a more liberal city like Portland.

But I think Jolly's point is that higher salary doesn't guarantee a better life. You have to factor in many things.
There were a lot of good looking women around Morgan City, but on Mission Beach? Dayum, son... never seen anything like it.

- Just because a place offers higher salaries/wages does not mean it is lacking in other measures. (Or, just because a place offers lower salaries/wages also do not mean it “wins” in other measures.)
