No, but they did understand the stories they adapted, which is what led to their success. Modern Disney—and the people who like this stuff or shrug it off as no big deal—do not, and so when these abominations flop it's of course because the people who didn't like it are racist or whatever. Not because the spirit of the story wasn't honored. Gotta be racism.
I actually found a lot of the early Disney adaptations really vomit-inducingly twee. Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen were very different in tone.
But that's just me. A lot of people seemed to like their stomach turning saccharin quality.
So you're okay with their virtue-signaling remakes but not the originals that put Disney on the map?
I'm not really ok with any of it, TBH. I've never liked Disney very much as an organization. They've always been as preachy as shit, it's just they're now doing it in a different way which annoys a different segment.
Do you hate Miyazaki stuff, too, then?
Never watched any.
Obviously, I've enjoyed some Disney - a lot of the Pixar stuff was great, but it wasn't really Disney in the same way. I'm sure there are others, and if you watch something like Pinocchio while ignoring some of the subtext, it's fine. But all those cutesy little birdies are revolting. And don't get me started on that freaking Gopher.
There's also levels of wokeness. Insisting on using Asian or black actors to portray Asian or black characters isn't really that horrendous an idea.
That's not what's going on. Do you know anything about the remake of Little Mermaid or Snow White? They're not just swapping skin colors around.
I don't need every third character to be gay or anything, but also it doesn't mean there shouldn't be any gayness whatsoever. It's a fact of modern life.
Again, that's not what's going on. They're punching down to elevate—something that, no, White Disney back in the day never did as a matter of course. They made different mistakes.
I tell you what I did enjoy recently - Arcane. I'm sure some people think it's a bit woke, but I thought it was great. It's pretty dark.
Yeah, I've seen that one around, but haven't watched it. What are some others that you're a fan of? I like a lot of old Disney, and a lot of the Ghibli stuff, too.
You want something that's neither woke nor patriarchal, and a little bit dark, might I suggest Wizards.

It's a fact of modern life.
All kinds of sick destructive behavior are facts of modern life.
That's not a good reason to say it's ok.
And the message here is that privileged, straight, white men are bad. They must be erased to make room for the perverts.
That is not the sort of twisted message that should be drilled into children.

How do you measure success? By box office take?
Try again. Stories are older than capitalism.
Go ahead and explain how you measure success.

Do you actually know any gay people? If so, is that how you speak in front of them, or do you just bottle it all up for this place?
I'm not suggesting they should put sexual behaviour into kids movies, but featuring a same-sex couple is hardly earth-shattering.

"Success" ≠ "Quality"
How do you measure either?
-

know any gay people?
Sure, but probably not as many as you, I bet you hold records for knowing the most gay people. That would make you such a good person.
But that virtue aside, there are still plenty of sick messages being sold to children now. The idea that straight, white men are evil is earth shattering.

Not with you. You just want to play games and don't engage in good faith arguments. Go annoy someone else.

You asked the question - perhaps you have an idea?
No matter what ideas Ax has, I can always help him fact check with a few phone calls. Ax, the floor is yours. I have your back.

I occasionally wonder if I hold the record for knowing the most assholes, which while superficially similar, isn't really the same thing at all.

Ok, fair point. You know at least one more asshole than I do.

@Axtremus it doesn’t matter how much it makes at the Box Office. They may find this quite profitable on the short term. In the long term, they just took a product that they have been manufacturing, selling, and promoting for 70 years and have made billions upon billions of dollars on and sold to billions and billions of children, and allowed a movie to be made that took a crap on the whole thing. believe there will be unintended consequences for the company from that.
@Doctor-Phibes You’re absolutely correct that Disney does not own the story of Snow White and there have been dozens of different variations of Snow White out there by different writers/producers/studios. I’ve got no problem with that. I’ve even found many to be pretty amusing and well done. I also have no problem with Disney coming up with an idea that stands one of their own movies on end and change everyone’s conception of that story. Maleficent stood Sleeping Beauty on its head, was different, enjoyable, and successful. I’ve got no problems there. I do have a problem when the writers/producers/cast are rolling their eyes when discussing the precedent that is making their work even possible. This lady has done multiple interviews and has repeatedly demeaned the original Disney film. I’m no great fan of Snow White, but that’s offensive. Sorry.
-
They scrapped the script and even the “7 companions” premise. Brought back the dwarfs and are writing a more faithful script. Dinklage must be having a conniption.
-
After all the starring lady had previously said, I wonder how she will respond to this. LOL
-
First, I hate/love watching that video George posted. She is SO SMUG before she even answers the question, and even more smug after she gives her cute little "it's no longer 1937" line. Well guess what, maybe it should be 1937. Cultural/media/society morals were better. Not perfect, but better than the wasteland that we see today.
Second, can we pause and even ask why she's all about snow white "being the leader was was born to be?" Most people would be better off being a good person they are born to me, and most people are absolutely not meant to be a leader. Not in a bad way, but why is there such an emphasis on being a "leader"?
Third, so they went from a production that had 1 dwarf among 6 other magical creatures... to ANIMATED dwarfs? Somehow Disney has gone from employing 1 dwarf to now cutting that acting role completely.
-
-
Not sure I'd agree that 1937 was that great compared to today.
The two bright spots were probably the Snow White movie and The Hindenburg,
