I’m staying in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Was woken up by sirens 3 times last night…

Dang, not even Hollywood has imagined a crash scene like this. Very much hope that the innocent bystanders are not hurt.

The pedestrian was killed. You can see him at the corner of the building just before impact.

        Murder 2.

It's Baltimore, don't hold your breath.

BTW, I pass through that intersection at night about every month or so.

          Please love yourself.

Yeah, I saw that!!! Wow!!! Feel bad for him.

I know that US cities have been decreasing chasing of cars because things like that happen.

But if you dont chase cars, does that mean the criminals are more likely to do bad things? But if you do chase cars, innocent people get hurt and injured.

              No easy choice.

Let 'em. Is a life worth less than an escaping speeding car? Tomorrow's another day.

Nah. You run, we shoot. You crash or cause others to crash, you're criminally liable.

Jacking a car worth your life or 25 years in the pen?

Not sure I understand the question. I'd rather see the dead pedestrian alive and the car gone, if that's what you're asking.

You seem to be assuming that letting carjackers just drive off is generally safer. I don't know why you would assume that.

I don't assume that. If this victim hadn't been killed, another one could have been. Who can say? I'm saying that police chases amid populated areas are dangerous, often to people who have nothing to do with the people directly involved.

And letting carjackers "just drive off" isn't quite the connotation I'm driving at. It's more a matter of public safety and not haring off at speed and risking lives over a stolen car.

There have to be better methods. Slower pursuit with more police cars? Drones?

                                Felony murder.

Unlike most murder charges, felony murder doesn't require the intent to kill, only:

the intent to commit the underlying felony (the "predicate felony"),
                                and

that someone died as a result of the felony.

Yeah well, there should be some high-tech gadgetry that could rise to the occasion. Remote disable. Or better, remote redirect of exhaust into the cabin, doors and windows lock and cannot open trapping the bad guys, radio plays prerecording of what is happening, then hideous laughter, then the car fills up with boiling water slowly boiling the thieves while they scream in agony, then the boiling water runs down into the EV battery packs which short out and the whole damn thing blows up in a huge fireball, the bodies incinerated, nothing left just a stain on the roadway.

Not sure I understand the question. I'd rather see the dead pedestrian alive and the car gone, if that's what you're asking.

George might can provide actual stats, but car theft has doubled or tripled in Chicago. It's a result of lack of law enforcement and Lightfoot's policies.

I don’t @Catseye3 is advocating for not enforcing the law, but is simply saying that high speed police chases shouldn’t be a part of the apprehension of the suspects. If they run when trying to arrest them, let them run and track them down later. And I get that argument. There is an element of public danger in these events and there are other ways that you can track the criminals down later. Cell phone tracking for one.

The problem with that approach, in my mind at least, is you don’t know what else is going on. Letting them race away presents other unknown risks to the public. If they carjacked the vehicle, the owner might still be inside and at risk. Or are you dealing with some intoxicated kids? If so, that’s another threat to the public. There’s countless scenarios. You can’t just assume that letting them go is safer for the general public.

And letting carjackers "just drive off" isn't quite the connotation I'm driving at. It's more a matter of public safety and not haring off at speed and risking lives over a stolen car.

There have to be better methods. Slower pursuit with more police cars? Drones?

Yeah okay, try that out and get back to us about the results.
