Reasonable chance his parents are progressives and thus proud. (Somehow it seems more likely that he has a progressive mother rather than father, though it could be both.) It's his parents' generation who were likely to have been rebelling against a larger culture. His generation are the squares, conforming with the progressives. Consider Greta Thunberg and her parents.
