I had a 13 year-old daughter. I might explain why "No" meant no (usually did), but I'm not engaging in deep psychological mumbo jumbo with somebody with a mind of mush.

Kids aren't great at rational thinking, but they're extremely intuitive. They know full well when you're trying to level with them, and I think they always appreciate it.

But they also damn well know how to pull different levers to try to change the power dynamic.

      Please love yourself.

        I have no levers. πŸ˜‰

In all seriousness, my son once told his sister to quit bitching and just come help me. He told her it's not going to take very long and you know Daddy will not stay off of our butts until we get it done.

They were much, much better at working their mother. I can be worked, but it's a lot harder.

My daughter is, I believe, going to be too nice a kid to plumb the depths of Machiavellianism I dabbled in. She's going to be a terrible handful, but probably not as bad as me.

          Please love yourself.

If she's really smart, you'll keep on believing that.

            I was only joking

I know that game, too. πŸ˜„

Lucas was able to work me, not his mom. So far, Finley has his mom wrapped around his finger.

You'd think telling the 13 year old she needs to be modest would be enough. πŸ™‚

Clearly I only have a 4 year old, don't have to worry about this yet.

But yes kids will be kids. I remember my parents wanted me to go to school with a tucket in shirt with jeans or something at one point....so I would get to to school, go to the bathroom, and switch into jogging pants or whatever I thought was better at the time.
