Wow. That was just crazy. I agree with @Jolly That was very quick way to react.
For me, before I noticed what was going on, I would have an axe in my head. :eek

And speaking of cops...
Why is that cop carrying the dog at the end?
Don't know why. It's obvious it's a police dog.

Guessing the police man was afraid of the broken glass on the street and having the dog run through the glass and cut up his feet.

Some observations:
- If the guy wanted to hurt the cop, he could've just crushed him with his car. Weird.
- The cop was lucky the guy had an issue putting the car in park at first. That bought the cop a few seconds.
- Great reaction speed by the cop. You can tell it took 10-20 seconds for the adrenaline rush to impact his speech, he even said "don't fire!" about 30 seconds later, which made no sense since the guy was on the ground grunting to breathe.
Tough to be a police officer these days, I can't imagine the constant stress of a threat being anywhere.

Yep. I assume I’m not the only one who watched that video thinking about ways in which the cop could be blamed for unnecessary use of force.

Crazy people do crazy things. Do not try rational thought with them, you'll be very disappointed. And hurt.
Standard training is that if somebody is coming at you with a lethal weapon - and a hatchet is certainly a lethal weapon, probably better than a knife (takes less skill to kill you) - you negate the threat. That's a fancy term for you shoot the perp, and you continue to shoot until he is no longer a threat to you or anybody else. In this case, the only excessive force would be if he continued to shoot the man after he lay on the ground.
