A lot of streets in the Detroit area work like that.

A u-turn and a right to go left

I was going to say the same thing, Copper. Certainly all up and down Telegraph Road.

So, like a roundabout, but designed by a psychopath

It makes U turns much easier, but jeez to go straight you have to do two merges…like a roundabout, but only at higher speeds.

You know what else would work? And be a lot less confusing? if you had a way to stop the traffic on two sides to allow the traffic on the the other two to move. Then after a pre-determined and reasonable amount of time, you stopped that traffic and let the other side go... Or would that be unreasonable?

I like roundabouts just fine, but they aren't right for every intersection, and this monstrosity would be a complete clusterfvck in an accident or for road maintenance.

Roundabouts and/or traffic lights are needed only when you are restricted to a spatial plane (two dimensions).

And as we all know, especially in Northern Virginia, it will take a crapload of time, money, and additional ground to install something of this size.

                    in Northern Virginia,

Roundabouts would work well in many NOVA intersections.

The lights used now, on route 7 for example, are terrible. I used to notice it flying in and out of Leesburg. I could see down route 7 for 10 or more miles. You could see that less than half, maybe 25%, of the road surface was in use because the red lights create groups of tightly packed cars. Once the group is created, it takes forever to spread the cars back out.

And all it takes is one MORON!!! to keep the traffic tightly packed at a slow speed.

We are getting more roundabouts here, and they work fine. But in towns like Carmel, Indiana they are every semi-major intersection, about every 1/10 or 1/4 mile. It makes driving very tiresome.

I’ll point to the success they had on Rt 28 from 66 to 7 with getting rid of the traffic lights and using entrance and exit ramps… That was a great improvement. Can’t really do that with 7, too many crossroads and not enough space… but roundabouts would work. Fairfax County Parkway has been improved with some ramps over the last 20 years, but there are a couple lights where a roundabout would work better. Wiehle, Franklin Farm, West Ox, and Sunrise Valley come to mind.

All those u turns look like a waste of space.

Very space inefficient design in general.

Yup, it’s in England somewhere. Traffic circles within traffic circles. They say it’s even worse when it rains and it’s hard to read the road signs. Good thing it doesn’t rain there often.

If you ever want real fun, try the big ones like that in Tijuana. They have concrete cylinders sticking up for a cop to stand on and semi-direct, not that anyone pays attention. Got to be one of the world's worst jobs.
