Agree with Horace. The small number may be good reason to not worry about (say) restroom issues but it isn’t compelling in athletics. You only need one bloke to make it unfair.
And even with a small number of trans athletes you’ll start seeing more and more records broken by the outlier XYs, at least in sports where upper body strength, and a larger cardiopulmonary system gives big advantages

Is there anyone who didn't think it was a stupid idea?
Is there even one person, anywhere in the world?
I doubt it.
You may overestimate the ability of humans to think rationally about socially advantageous ideas they absorb and parrot.

If the penis offends you, just get over it.
Additionally, he elaborated on how the university had told parents one thing and then did the exact opposite. “In the fall of 2019, when Lia first came out, the girls were told she would have her own separate space somewhere,” the father said. “For some reason, that obviously changed. I’m not sure why it changed. Was it money? Was it legal threats?”
Penn wouldn’t listen to any female swimmers’ complaints about having to be exposed to male genitalia, he said. Penn basically told them to shut up and deal with it.
“Regarding Lia in the locker room, Penn told any female swimmers who had issues to essentially ‘get over it,’" the father said. "They can’t ostracize Lia.”
“Multiple swimmers have raised it, multiple different times,” a Penn swimmer said of discomfort within the locker room. “But we were basically told that we could not ostracize Lia by not having her in the locker room and that there’s nothing we can do about it, that we basically have to roll over and accept it, or we cannot use our own locker room.”

I am all for live and let live but when it intrudes on the fairness of a competition, or other more egregious violations of someone else's rights, then it cannot be permitted to continue.
"A league of their own" is not just a great movie, and movie title. They should have a league of their own.
I mean, why not then, just do away with gender based sports? All compete on ability regardless of gender, sex, or identity?

What does Title 9 actually do?
Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.
What if 1,000 men want to play sports and only 100 women want to play sports?
Go find another 900 women.

Swimming's world governing body, FINA, has voted to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in elite women's competitions and create a working group to establish an "open" category for them in some events.
...
The new policy, which takes effect Monday, will require transgender competitors to have completed their transition by age 12 to be able to compete in women's competitions. The working group will spend the next six months to determine how to set up the new open category, FINA said.

No child should be transitioning at all by age 12, much less having completed the process.
Child abuse.
