- No moderators
- A timekeeper and a large traffic signal light everyone can see, Green for 3 minutes, Yellow for 30 seconds to wrap up, and Red - that’s when your microphone is OFF to prevent unwarranted interruption.
3)Take the top ten issues and let the candidates ask the other a question related to that issue. Allow the 3.5 minute response, then the questioner gets a 1 minute rebuttal. The you go to the other candidate to pose a question on the same topic. - 10 topics at 4.5 minutes each or 9 minutes per topic.
And use technology to scramble any cheating, such as in-ear devices, etc. They each can bring hand-written notes and are allowed a scratch pad.
Is the RNC demanding those changes?
Regardless, I am OK with the first four points.
As for the last point about scrambling in-ear devices, etc. to prevent cheating. I have two problem with this:
(1) there is no evidence of cheating, and if the final candidates who won their respective primaries are such petty cheaters, we as a nation and as a people have much bigger problems than cheating on televised debates.
(2) Running the executive branch of the nation is not a one-person job. It is a team effort. It is arguable that it is even more important for the leader to be able to assemble and inspire a team of very smart people to work towards a coherent set of goals than it is for the leader to be personally very smart him/herself. So I would prefer the leading candidates all debate with their full team of support staff and subject matter experts on deck running fact-checking and feeding them facts and statistics and tactical information during debate. It makes no sense to vote for a leader based on who can memorize more factual information that can be easily Googled these days. Lets see the combined intellect of his/her whole team.
And what a clusterfuck that would be...

Joe Rogan will invite both candidates to have a four hour discussion.
Sadly I think this is the direction we are heading over the next decade or two. I actually would pay good money too... but I feel like we are heading towards Idiocracy...
What is sad about the idea of a long form discussions with politicians, a la Joe Rogan?
It's sad that we are unable, it seems, to have formal, civil, debates. Or sad that long form discussions would be held by someone who is a comedian and previous host of a show that required contestants to eat live cockroaches. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good conversation/facilitator on his show, but again... Idiocracy, watch it. Our society should have higher standards.
@Jolly I like that format, especially the mic being cut off when it's not your turn to speak. I doubt the candidates would stick to the topics though if no moderator was present.
Not sticking to topics? Okay. I think that if one candidate dodges or ducks topics constantly, the public will make up their own minds about that.
