Just pasted a quote from an article and got insetting "highlights."

The highlighted part of the pasted text is between apostrophes in the original.

Looks like some plug-in is making stuff between apostrophes highlighted if they're part of quoted text, but not in original post.

      This is's a test'. Test.

      This is another test.

@George-K this behavior occurs independently of quotes. It only occurs with backticks (`) not regular apostrophes (').

It's a longstanding part of Markdown. Is it really a problem? Usually, backticks are used very seldomly in normal text.

In some circumstances it's quite useful to have a way to disable automatic formatting etc. (called "quotation" in CS lingo), and that's what the backtick is for.

!!! warning [Warning]: Nerd alert: The following text isn't suitable for normal humans. Caution advised.

For instance, let's say you want to explain how to write a word in italics. Using backticks, I can write that _foo_ produces foo. I produced _foo_ by writing `_foo_`. Your next question might be how to produce `_foo_`. You do that by writing `` `_foo_` ``.

Interesting glitch in mid August. Also interesting that page views by bots have gone down so suddenly. Presumably the result of a software update.

Florida Keys with my girlfriend Monica and her mother, who we brought along to cheer up as she was newly divorced. I rented a convertible.

I was already working, but as Monica was in her 3rd year of law school it was in fact her spring break.

Jon, you have a big head.
Just thought you ought to know.

But on the bright side! -- a big head sticking out of the top of a Vette looks just the right size!!

Do you know what will save us from an evil group taking over the internet?

It's not security mechanisms, or encryption, or passwords. It's software interoperability, or rather, the lack thereof. It's just too damn hard and too much work to make everything fit together.
