Mrs. George just commented that she might be interested in getting one.

    Does anyone here have one?

Like it? What kind? What downsides?

No clue. We have carpet d hardwood and a stepdown to the living room, all sorts of obstacles. But I bet the cat would enjoy it.

We got a Eufy a couple years ago.

It was ok for a few moths, then it got louder and louder. I never did figure out the noise, we just tossed it.

Never found one that didn't break within six months. Tried several. Never again.

Are you taking about the Roomba? We have one; we call it Spot Clean Max, and use it mainly for the hallways when the rugs are getting cleaned. Ours works fine if it's in an empty space.
Otherwise I have to babysit it. The app is glitchy, and we're a pretty techy family. Also, one of my dogs will bark at it; and the other one will run away.

I don't think it's worth the money, but we got it as a Christmas gift.

I am brand agnostic. We have a lot of furniture and stuff, so that's one of my concerns about it being effective.

However, I can see using it once we move some chairs out of the way for getting rid of cat hair.

The Eufy worked ok for a number of months. We would let it run randomly for a couple hours. It was able to navigate obstacles and it would pick up dust and other light bits of flotsam. It worked on carpets and wood floor, but we did have to keep it out of the dining room because the carpet had tassels on the ends and it could get tangled.![alt text](0c992637-ea36-46a5-9b83-93ae8c5040d9-image.png image url)

If they get to be more durable I might try again, it is a good idea.

I've had two. The Roomba is better. They work much better and last longer if you do the detailed cleaning procedure as specified in the manual.

They do not take the place of your regular vacuum, but can certainly lengthen the intervals of when you need it.

Looking at Consumer Reports, the prices are outrageously different. A high-end one is about $900 (ridiculous for a vacuum, right?) and a middle-of-the-road one is about half the price - with pretty much the same performance, albeit with fewer bells and whistles.

I also have been using iRobot’s Roomba for many years. It works quite well for routine cleaning. I never bother to buy the latest version that connects to Wi-Fi and talks to a smartphone app. I just stick to the basic and manually push the buttons when I want it to start a cleaning cycle.

It can get stuck with frills and loose carpet threads and paper napkins on the floor and wires/cables on the floor. Typically anything that can trip up your motorized manual vacuum cleaner will also likely trip up the Roomba. Still, overall it does save time and effort compared to manual vacuuming.

w00t had a sale on the iRobot Roomba 960 (refurbed). It was about half-price.

The 960 gets good reviews and is one of the best in carpet cleaning and reliability. It has a 75 minute battery life, and when battery runs low, it goes back to the base station, recharges, and finishes the job.

Only $240, so I pulled the trigger.

Yes. However, I had problems with the WiFi and it wouldn't connect to the phone. After an hour on the phone with tech support (restarting networks, etc), they finally assumed it was a bad WiFi board and sent me a replacement.

It does a really good job. We've had a cleaning service come every other week for years (just clean living areas and the master main bedroom). I've been shocked at the amount of dirt it's pulling out of the carpets. Every time I run it, the bin is full, and I've run it about 8 times now.

I like the fact that it docks itself to recharge when the battery's low. It does get snagged on fringe on carpets, so it demands some attention. Also, it's gotten stuck under the sofa...

I have a Guatemalan woman that comes over and vacuums. Let’s herself in and out. Never asked her about her batteries.
