They don't like the court's decision so they are protesting outside of Kavanaugh's home. It would be really nice if people just acted like grown ups when they don't get their way.

Three years ago, hundreds of women, femmes, and allies undertook a month of bold direct action to stop the Senate from confirming accused sexual predator Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. We warned what would happen. And now, in the dead of night, Kavanaugh and four of his colleagues have effectively overturned the right to an abortion. (Although we must acknowledge that the right wing had already succeeded in making abortion largely inaccessible for many people without means and people of color living in certain states.)

Make no mistake, what's happening to reproductive justice and abortion rights is far bigger than one person. But Kavanaugh is playing a key role, and so far he's been protected from any backlash. No more.

Brett Kavanaugh: You're going to hear from us directly. Last week we came to the Supreme Court. But you weren’t there; the justices continue to work remotely. So we're coming to your house to
-- tell you to keep your oppressive
-- ideology out of our bodies
      demand you RESIGN immediately.

Monday, September 13. Meet at Chevy Chase Local Park at 6:30 PM. We will walk/roll half a mile to Kavanaugh's house and make our voices heard.

Accessibility note: If you think you'll be unable to walk/roll half a mile, please email accessibility@shutdowndc.org and we will coordinate rides.

A few notes for attendees: 1. Please try to be as inclusive as possible in your language. Women and girls are not the only people who can get pregnant and need abortions. 2. Please avoid comparing U.S. abortion-restricting politicians to the Taliban. The former are a distinctly homegrown phenomenon and ignoring that in favor of such comparisons is Islamophobic. (Yes, oppressive right-wing factions are a problem wherever they are.)

This should have been in Ax's "New Civility" thread.

"Now look here, you Baltic gas passer... " - Mik, 6/14/08

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

        STOP THE STEAL!

        Oh, sorry. Wrong thread.

Thank goodness nobody ever protests outside abortion clinics or harangues the people going into them. That would be unconscionable.

Very few people live in an abortion clinic.

Because you have the legal right to act like an obnoxious twat doesn't mean that it's OK.

This is something a lot of people seem to struggle with.

Nope, don't struggle with it at all. You seem to have some idea that protesting is not allowed.

It is. If it's on a city street or outside a business or public venue, it is. People have the right to drool in public. Now, we can talk about permits, etc., but protesting is still allowed.

Where I do draw the line, and what I think is Constitutional, is banning protesting and harassing somebody in their own home.

What is the goal of these protests? Do they expect Kavanaugh to suddenly say “Wow, the power of their convictions are incredible! Maybe I was wrong in my deliberations… Yes! Yes I was! Down with the Texas Law!”

                      Kavanaugh isn't their actual audience.

Stole my reply. Nearly every protest I saw in DC was basically a big exercise in catharsis for those involved. Makes people feel better by holding signs and chanting unoriginal phrases.

The downside of this particular protest is they're making it personal. The same thing goes for people yelling outside abortion clinics. They're harrassing individuals who have made a decision they don't approve of, and in many cases are people who are already having a really, really difficult day.

You think they are having a bad day? The child is facing a much tougher day…

The abortion debate will always come down to the one big question of when does life begin? And that answer informs your choice. If you believe a 10 week old fetus is a living person, how do you not fight for their protection?

IOW, it's ok to act like a complete twat if your cause is just, which is what I said earlier.

I think Kavanaugh is surrounded by female influencers. Let’s see a real case for the Supreme Court to react to.

They are all entirely convinced they are acting like grown-ups. Grown-ups with the courage and principles to do what is right. To be on the right side of history. It is incumbent on such people to be the ones to make a statement, while other sheeple do nothing. They believe this because it's fun and self-serving to believe it, and the belief is reinforced by the broader culture. There is no shame in doing what they do. Only glory, and fun.

It’s only a matter of time before abortion disappears anyway. After all, non-menstruating women can’t have one, so it’s not really appropriate for anyone to have one…

A good friend has decided to step down from the local school board. he hasn't said it, but those who oppose his views, which are very mainstream, started a movement to boycott his business, a local family pub. Great place.

Civility is a thing of the past it seems.

The TDS-ifiying of the culture. As I've mentioned before, TDS brought righteous political hatreds into the mainstream. They had never been nearly so mainstream before. Then with Jan 6 and its vindication of all that deranged hatred, I think deranged righteous political hatreds are permanently embedded in the culture now.

                                          Education is extremely important.
