Remember how Windows 10 was going to be the last version of Windows?

    I was only joking

I've always been a fan of the version numbering scheme of the TeX and METAFONT systems. METAFONT is on version 2.71828182 whereas TeX is on version 3.141592653. The version numbers converge against e and pi, respectively.

Well, the author of these articles says that this is really Windows 10.X.

I'd say the most immediate thing that needs fixing in Windows is that you never know where to look for or change an option. There's a completely weird mix of control panels, device managers, semi-secret apps you can only start via command line, etc. that all stem from different versions and times.

Also, they really need to bring back the talking paperclip. That was so funny.

(I know, I know, that was Office, not Windows. Still....)

It is completely beyond me why anybody would get excited by those screenshots. They could easily be Win 10.

The last Windows version that was somewhat coherent was MS DOS 5.0.

A few years ago I listened to a lot of the nay-sayers, and put Ubuntu on a dual-boot for a laugh. During one of its many updates it essentially bricked the partition, at which point I decided to become a penguin-killing psychopath.

Windows has never done that to me, for all its many irritations.

I like the leaked version, but I also liked Windows Vista so maybe don't listen to me.

UI design seems to be moving towards flat and sleek at the expense of usability.

I remember big buttons with black outlines (now you gotta hover over the icons to see the button outlines). Big input boxes for text fields, large scrolling bars with precise control.

Yes - the UI's look better these days. I think they're also less functional.

Yeah, but these kinds of things happen in waves. It'll swing back soon and old will become new again.

Sometimes there are real revolutions. The most significant for UI design was probably the "Mother of All Demos" from 1968.
