Robin Williams did mostly improv, at 90 miles a minute. But I agree, a lot of it was not original, but regurgitated at a rapid rate.
Williams was the same off camera. I once heard a guy interviewed that went to school with him and the guy said after a few weeks of the rapid fire repertoire, most people were ready to kill him.

I actually think that his strongest work was in his less manic, more serious movies. Awakenings, The Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King....
He demonstrated a humanity and vulnerability that you didn't see in the comedy stuff.
