In my age cohort, my risk is 5%.

Both my 80+ parents survived COVID without any real issue. Recovered in two weeks. With my dad on his death bed with cancer all across his body. It's a strange disease. There must be some genetic marker(s) that could tell us which among us are susceptible to bad cases.

        Education is extremely important.

I saw a very interesting tweet a while back, that combined this info with disease incidence by age cohort and also included some non-age-related groups.

Combining this you could get to a very interesting number - how many people of such-and-such group need to be vaccinated in order to prevent one death?

For certain age and comorbidity categories, it was less than 1000. For some of the so-called essential worker categories it was on the order of 30k.

          Only non-witches get due process.

60% of deaths are people older than 75. 80% over age 65.

But we’ve known this forever. I’m quite sure the rates of death are greatly impacted by co-morbid conditions.

If I were young I would have lots of questions around why I lost not only a year of my life but my job prospects too. Why didn’t the scientists and media truly focus on the most vulnerable?

I think one thing we are missing talking about in this forum thread is that it is not only dead people which are effected.

Alot of people are sick and "recover" but still have problems.

That's horseshit. If some "young person" "lost a year of their life" it's their own fault and no one else's.

The people who lost a year of their lives are the folks we basically imprisoned in nursing and assisted living facilities.

But yeah, sure, let's vaccinate more young people and keep the older ones imprisoned, that really fucking helps everything.

They are starting to open things up in the homes We can now see my MIL again under controlled circumstances. But the damage this past year did to her is perhaps crueler than taking her chances.

My two teenage children struggled, but neither lost a year of their lives, my son took a year out of college and worked, my daughter is in high school. The people who lost years of their lives are the ones who died.

How many stories about the vulnerable were published last summer or fall? A few about the nursing homes in NY, but the focus of those was mostly the governor.

Not when it came to the pandemic. The only time my British friends mentioned Trump really was to comfort themselves with the thought that whilst Bo-Jo is a complete plonker, it could always be worse.

In this country, and much of the world, the focus was Mr. Trump, all year long.

Not when it came to the pandemic. The only time my British friends mentioned Trump really was to comfort themselves with the thought that whilst Bo-Jo is a complete plonker, it could always be worse.

Same in the Far East. President Trump was obviously in the news, but not really about the pandemic.

Both my 80+ parents survived COVID without any real issue. Recovered in two weeks. With my dad on his death bed with cancer all across his body. It's a strange disease. There must be some genetic marker(s) that could tell us which among us are susceptible to bad cases.

                                        Significance
We show that a haplotype on chromosome 12, which is associated with a ∼22% reduction in relative risk of becoming severely ill with COVID-19 when infected by SARS-CoV-2, is inherited from Neandertals. This haplotype is present at substantial frequencies in all regions of the world outside Africa. The genomic region where this haplotype occurs encodes proteins that are important during infections with RNA viruses.
