if he lived with you and didn't provide half his own support you're good.

Walmart probably took taxes out - he may want to file a return to get a refund. I don't know if he has to or not.

Turbotax has really good help pages for this stuff.

    Only non-witches get due process.

Luke made $7K at Walmart last year. Is that going to affect his status as my dependent?

@lufins-dad No, just make sure he doesn’t file as head of household, lol.

I’ve had to educate my kids on how to file...They see the bigger number they could get back if they claim themselves and get all jazzed.

He made more than $4300, so Luke may not qualify as a dependent. He also probably has to file.

As has been said, seek professional help.

It just has to be defensible in the unlikely event of a challenge. 1/4 of your household expenses surely exceed 7500. you're good.

LD, we've got the same issue, as my son is 19 and working part-time for the first time.

I'll be plugging him into the tax software to see what happens, and checking online. Admittedly, my taxes are probably more straightforward than yours as I'm a regular 9-5'er.

@lufins-dad Seriously... do the research. Jon is right but only because he is 16. Next year he may not be what they call a Qualifying Child. You need to understand these things thoroughly.

                                        Uhhhhmmm, 18...

When does he turn 19? In whatever year that is he will have to be a full time student up until age 24.

Next year...My big question was really all about the “half the support”. That is a very nebulous benchmark.

Do you charge him room and board? If not then his income is discretionary.
