    Wow.

    A trip through New York City in 1911

    Link to video

    Note the automobiles with right-hand drive, while driving on the right-hand side of the street!

    And, everyone wore a hat!

    Berlin in 1896:

      @George-K Thanks for sharing!

      The New York one, when the one car came to a stop to let the cable car pass, he stuck out his arm when he was stopping, almost like a bicycle. I guess they did not have brake lights on the original cars there.

          Decades ago, when I went to driving school, I was taught hand/arm signals for turns etc.

            Don't they still teach hand signals?

              I love this.

              Recently I've been watching Apocalypse on Amazon prime - a lot of colourised WW1 footage. Some is better quality than others, however the documentary is well worth a look.

              I was only joking

                  Watching black and white videos, with the herky-jerky motion makes the past look so removed.

                  Smoothed out, and colorized, it looks like yesterday, and makes it so real. It's like the WWI movie that Peter Jackson made. The immediacy makes it relatable, and not history book stuff.

                      Well said. What struck me, such as in the Paris video, was how โ€œnormalโ€ the fountains looked. As if it was a congested tourist spot we see today...except 100+ years ago. Aside from the horse-based society and dated clothing, it really looks very relatable. Fun/trippy to watch!

                        Luckily, they are not able to recreate the smell.

                          Great stuff. I showed the videos to a few people yesterday, it was amazing how sucked in they were.
