The Department of Obvious Reality observes contract law. And yes, indeed, a technology company can explicitly exclude certain uses of its technology. (In fact there was an example of this in the news just last week).
The remedy for a customer is to switch vendors. Perhaps even a law suit if they think a contract was violated. It ends there. It does not include using government power to punish the company let alone threaten its viability.

Tantalizing. But since you didn't cite the example, I assume it's not a very good analogy to a defense contractor trying to limit what the DoD can do, within the law.

It’s a good conversation to have, but we can’t control what the rest of the world will do, and we’re not going to competitively hamstring ourselves. At least not until enough America hating Dems take the reins. It’s easy to see undercurrents of the more progressive left who would be happy to see America lose military and economic superiority.

The issue really isnt whether amthropic is more or less conservative than OpenAI or Xai in terms of what they’ll provide. Someone is going to satisfy the desires of the pentagon.
The issue is the government punishing a company for not bowing to its demands.

Everybody in this thread has stipulated that that's wrong. And whether something is your issue or not, for your personal dunking purposes, does not define what all the issues are. Anthropic's attempt to rein in the DoD's usage of its technology is a very important issue, and probably of longer term consequence than the idiotic retribution from the Trump administration against Anthropic.

I’d say the opposite. DoD will swap out Anthropic in a few months. If the punishment isn’t reversed in court Anthropic could go from being one of the worlds best AI firms to a non player. Given the stakes of the global competition that seems potentially costly.

Eventually the "coding by AI" thing that Anthropic does well will be similar to the early days where "searching by Yahoo" was the way to find things on the internet.... eventually any company will be able to do it. We see it with Cursor, and Codex, and a million other coding by AI firms, it seems. I'm surprised Google doesn't have one yet, maybe it does but I'm still a n00b when it comes to prompt jockey skills, especially compared to @horace !

I wrote a metric that is better than I could have created in practice, and which is theoretically elegant, just yesterday. Unfortunately it didn't take much in the way of prompt skills. I did ask it questions though. Here, have a look.
