Apparently 127MM watched the half time show, a little under 5MM watched TPUSA. Most Americans didn’t need a safe space. Nature is healing.

That doesn’t really say anything. For an alternative broadcast, that’s actually really good numbers. Compare it with any other broadcast or steaming at the same time.

I wasn’t really evaluating it from the standpoint of
mere preference, many more than 5MM would have preferred the alternative music. I was looking more at the number of Americans who were in such desperate need of a safe space from the big bad bunny that they went to the trouble of seeking it out. It was a refreshingly low number.

Certainly lower than the number of safe space seekers who find it emotionally taxing to watch their president give a speech.

Easily the best part of all this is American Christian conservatives who typically clap on the freaking down beat enthusiastically promoting some faux rapper from Detroit who's been outspokenly in favour of sex with underage girls.

      I was only joking

I’m sure we can all stipulate that everybody in the other tribe is a pedophile. But baw wit da baw and God Knows Why are still great.

A list of non-American bands that have played the Superbowl:

            U2 (Ireland): Performed in 2002.
The Rolling Stones (UK): Performed in 2006.
            Coldplay (UK): Performed in 2016.
The Who (UK): Performed in 2010.
Shania Twain (Canada): Performed in 2003.
Phil Collins (UK): Performed in 2000.
The Weeknd (Canada): Performed in 2021.
Paul McCartney (UK): Performed in 2005.
            Sting (UK): Performed in 2003.
            Shakira (Colombia): Co-headlined in 2020.
            Rihanna (Barbados): Performed in 2023.
J Balvin (Colombia): Appeared in 2020.

Was there a lot of complaining when these folk played, or are the UK and Canada considered to be more "American" than Puerto Rico?

I'm afraid I disapprove enormously of this sexualization of traditional Christian rap music. Who can forget Joseph of Arimathea's "Nothing but a J thang in ma' Garden, biatch!", and the uplifting rhythm's of Lil' Saul-Paul's "Straight Outta Tarsus"?

That last one is, after all these years, still one hell of a Saturday night toe tapper.

I think Mark Farner might have even done a cover of it back in the day.

I thought the set was great. All those sugar cane plants were worn by a person, that's how they got such a huge set out there so fast. Opera-like subtitles would have been useful, but maybe they didn't want us Gringos to know what he was saying.

I agree. For example, K-pop is big right now. If they would have had a K-Pop group singing (in Korean) and no subtitles, I think people would have complained.

Obviously, they will need time to find somebody who knows somebody who speaks Spanish.

I do remember him saying "Ayy" like 1000x times. Here are his lyrics.

                          [Intro]
The National Football League welcomes you to the Apple Music Super Bowl 60 halftime show
How wonderful it is to be Latino
                          Today we drink

                          [Part I: Tití Me Preguntó]

                          [Intro: Bad Bunny]
                          Ayy

                          [Chorus: Bad Bunny]
Auntie asked me if I have a lot of girlfriends, ayy, a lot of girlfriends
Today I have one, tomorrow I'll have another, heh, but there's no wedding
Auntie asked me if I have a lot of girlfriends, ayy, a lot of girlfriends
Today I have one, tomorrow I'll have another, ayy

                          [Refrain: Bad Bunny]
I'm gonna take them all to the VIP, the VIP, hey
                          Say hello to auntie
Let's take a selfie, say "cheese"
Let the ones I already fucked smile
In a VIP, a VIP, ayy
                          Say hello to auntie
Let's take a selfie, say "cheese"
Let those who have already forgotten about me smile

                          [Verse: Bad Bunny]
                          I really like the Gabriela's
                          The Patricia's, the Nicole's, the Sofía's
My first girlfriend in kindergarten, María
And my first love's name was Thalia
I've got a Colombian who writes me every day
And a Mexican I didn't even know about
Another one in San Antonio that still loves me
And the ones from PR that are all mine
A Dominican who is a fresh hottie, ayy
                          Fresh, fresh hottie
The one from Barcelona that came by plane
And says that my dick is fire
I let them play with my heart
I'd like to move in with all of them to a mansion
The day I get married I'll send them an invitation
                          Boy, stop that

[Part II: Yo Perreo Sola + Safaera]

                          [Refrain: Nesi & Bad Bunny]
You used to ignore me (You ignored me)
Now I ignore you (Hmm, nah)
Before, you didn't want to (Didn't want to)
Now I don't want to (Hmm, no)
You used to ignore me (-nored me)
                          Women all over the world
                          Now I ignore you
                          Before, you didn't want to
                          Now I don't want to
                          Twerking without fear

                          [Chorus: Nesi & Bad Bunny]
No, chill, I twerk alone (Hmm, ayy)
Ayy, ayy, ayy, move it, move it, move it
                          I twerk alone (Twerk alone)
                          Okay, ayy, ayy

                          [Verse: Bad Bunny]
My D is being chased and I want you to hide it
                          Grab it like a bonga
She took a pill that made her horny
She fucks in the Audi, not in the Honda, ayy
If I give it to you, don't call me
'Cause this is not to make you love me
                          If your boyfriend doesn't—
                          He better fu—, ayy, ayy

                          [Bridge: Bad Bunny]
When she twerks she doesn't stop
She smokes and gets horny, ayy
She'll call you if she needs you, ayy
But for now she is alone
                          She twerks—

                          [Part III: Party]

[Chorus: Elena Rose & Bad Bunny]
                          Party, party, party, party
                          Party, party, party, party
Welcome to the biggest party in the whole world
                          Party, party, party, party
                          Party, party, party, party
                          Ayy, ayy

[Part IV: VOY A LLeVARTE PA PR]

                          [Intro: Bad Bunny]
I met her in Miami, in Brickell
                          She knows there's money here
She wants me to make a move on her
Wants me to smuggle her back home, ayey

                          [Chorus: Bad Bunny]
I'm gonna take you to Puerto Rico, baby, so you can see how we dance
Bring your friend if you like the idea
Tell her we're partying tonight, ayy
We're gonna have a great time
                          Nobody's getting married here
But you're gonna want to stay, ayy

                          [Outro: Bad Bunny]
Take advantage, I'm single (Ay), single

[Part V: Pa' Que Retozen + Dale Don Dale + Noche de Travesura + Gasolina]

[Verse: Tego Calderón, Don Omar, Héctor "El Father", Daddy Yankee & Glory]
This is for you, so you can enjoy it
Come on, come on, Don, come on
If the girls dance on the dance floor, it's awesome
If-If-If-If the girls dance on the dance floor, it's awesome
                          She likes the gasoline
                          Give me more gasoline

                          [Part VI: EoO]

[Intro: Bad Bunny & Tito "El Bambino"]
You're listening to music from Puerto Rico
From the neighborhoods and the housing projects
She's coming around and she never shows up alone, alo-lo-lo-lo—
                          She never shows up alone
All the bad boys put down their gu—, ayy, ayy
Tonight, this is what's going on-on-on-on-on (Say it)

[Chorus: Bad Bunny & Tito "El Bambino"]
                          Dancing perreo, baby, grinding, baby
Tra-tra, baby, all the way down, baby
I'll grab you, baby, in the club, baby
Ayy, ayy, ayy (Tra-tra, baby, tra-tra, baby)
                          Dancing perreo, baby, grinding, baby
Tra-tra, baby, you are Latino, baby
In the club, baby, I'll grab you, baby
Ayy, all the way down, baby
                          Tra-tra, baby, tra-tra, baby

                          [Part VII: MÓNACO]

                          [Intro: Bad Bunny]
                          Good afternoon, California
My name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio
And if today I'm here at the 60th Super Bowl
It's because I never, never stopped believing in me
And you should, you should believe in yourself too
You're more valuable than you think, believe me
                          Heh

                          [Verse: Bad Bunny]
Tell me, tell me, tell me, this is what you wanted?

[Part VIII: Die With A Smile]

                          [Intro]
By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife
                          You may kiss the bride

                          [Verse: Lady Gaga]
Ooh, lost, lost in the words that we scream
I don't even wanna do this anymore
'Cause you already know what you mean to me
And our love's the only war worth fighting for

                          [Pre-Chorus: Lady Gaga]
Wherever you go, that's where I'll follow
                          Nobody's promised tomorrow
So I'ma love you every night like it's the last night
                          Like it's the last night

                          [Chorus: Lady Gaga]
                          If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you
                          If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while
                          And die with a smile
                          If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you

                          [Part IX: BAILE INoLVIDABLE]

                          [Intro: Bad Bunny]
While one is alive one must love as much as possible

                          [Refrain: Bad Bunny]
                          No, I can't forget you
                          No, I can't erase you
You taught me how to love
You taught me how to dance

                          [Verse: Bad Bunny]
                          And I've had many girlfriends
                          But none like you
I don't have my sun anymore, I live on the moon
If I think of you, I'd go for it in an instant
Ayy, ayy, my devil, my angel, my crazy girl, ayy
My devil, my angel, my crazy girl, eh-eh

                          [Outro: Bad Bunny]
                          Dance, dance, dance without fear
                          Love without fear

                          [Part X: NUEVAYoL]

                          [Intro: Bad Bunny]
                          New York!
                          Okay

[Chorus: Andy Montañez & Bad Bunny]
                          If you wanna have fun
                          With charm and delight
You just have to liver (Where?)
A summer in New York (New York!)
If you wanna have fun (Eh, eh, eh, eh)
With charm and delight (But what's this?)
You just have to live (San Francisco)
A summer in New York (Enjoy it, 'cause this is just for a bit)

                          [Verse: Bad Bunny]
Hey, hey, hey, July 4th, 4th of July
I'm hanging out drunk with my cousin, feeling fly
My people in The Bronx know what's up
Buzzing high over in Washington Heights
Willie Colón, they call me "The Bad One," hey
'Cause the years go by and I'm still hitting hard
Selling albums like Frida Kahlo paintings
The coke is white, yeah, yeah, the 2CB's pink, eh-eh
Don't get it twisted, no, no, better avoid it, ayy
A shot of rum at Toñita's house and Puerto Rico feels so close
I have the championship, nobody can take it from me

[Interlude: Tito Trinidad & Bad Bunny]
                          The best in the world
Number one, the best in the world, ¿okay? Puerto Rico!
                          Always believe in yourself

                          [Outro: Bad Bunny]
How's Bad Bunny gonna be the king of pop, ayy, with reggaetón and dembow?

[Part XI: LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii]

                          [Chorus: Ricky Martin]
They want to take my river and my beach too
They want my neighborhood and grandma to leave
No, don't let go of the flag nor forget the lelolai
'Cause I don't want them to do to you what happened to Hawaii
No, don't let go of the flag nor forget the lelolai
'Cause I don't want them to do to you

                          [Part XII: El Apagón]

                          [Intro]
With so much love for y'all

                          [Chorus: Bad Bunny]
Puerto Rico's so fucking great, heh, it's so fucking great

                          [Verse 1: Bad Bunny]
From Carolina came reggaeton and the sons of bitches from Bayamón
Ayy, ayy, they want to ride the wave and they haven't gone to Rincón
A little kiss for grandma on the balcony
Catching all the holes, on the Rubicon
P fuckin' R, ayy, land of Maelo and Tego Calderón
And of Barea who was champion before than LeBron
                          Hmm, damn, another blackout
Let's go to the bleachers to light up a blunt
                          Before Pipo gets a sla—

                          [Chorus: Bad Bunny]
Puerto Rico's so fu— great, heh, it's so fucking great
Puerto Rico's so fu— great, ayy, ayy, ayy

                          [Verse 2: Bad Bunny]
Ditch Maldivas, I'm staying in Palomino, ayy
If not then I'm going to DR, greetings to my neighbors, ayy
Here the heat is different, the sun is taíno, ayy
The capital of perreo, now everyone wants to be Latino, no
But they lack rhythm, drums and reggaetón, ayy, ayy
Careful with my friends, we're a bunch
They lack rhythm, drums and reggaetón, ayy, ayy
Careful with my friends, we're a bunch
                          Welcome to the heat

                          [Part XIII: CAFé CON RON]

[Chorus: Los Pleneros de la Cresta & Bad Bunny]
Coffee in the morning, rum in the afternoon
We're already out in the streets, come out to your balcony
Coffee in the morning, rum in the afternoon
We're already out in the streets, come out to your balcony
Coffee in the morning, rum in the afternoon
We're already out in the streets, come out to your balcony

                          [Part XIV: DtMF]

And my motherland, my homeland: Puerto Rico
                          We're still here
                          Now!

                          [Chorus: Bad Bunny]
I should've taken more pictures when I had you
I should've given you more kisses and hugs whenever I could
I hope my people never move away

Of course the TPUSA family-friendly show had a man who (besides lip-syncing, couldn't even sing live like the Bunny) has previous songs with such Epstein-y lyrics like this:

“Young ladies, young ladies, I like ’em underage/ See, some say that’s statutory/ But I say it’s mandatory.”

There's been way more talk about the show than about the actual game. It kind of feels like all the people who go on about the Oscars ceremony but never talk about movies, or who complain about commercials but not the actual product - as if Bud Lite commercials were in some way worse than actual Bud Lite.

                              I was only joking

Will this never go away? Based on Kirk I had some hope for TPUSA. Now they just look like another reactionary group trying to milk the tragedy of his murder.

Yeah that is true. And while I'm often wrong about the Trump predictions, I am getting the sense that the idea of MAGA and TPUSA is on a steady track to the trash pile, eventually being entities no politician wants to be connected with. Not now, but the momentum and trajectory seems headed that way.
