          My mom always made a really simple chili with tomato juice. I'm trying some tonight with V8 for a little kick.

            I don't cook chili myself and I don't plan to try anytime soon. Relying only on my instinct for food preparation and my experience as a food consumer, this is my made-up short list of "secret ingredients" that might add depth/sophistication/intrigue to the taste of chili:

            • cinnamon
            • yellow ginger
            • star anise
            • bay leaves
            • sumac

            If anyone has tried any of the above, let me know how it turned out.
