The secret to good chili?

Weird, but I guess. Making chili tonight, sans the secret ingredient.

I don't cook chili myself and I don't plan to try anytime soon. Relying only on my instinct for food preparation and my experience as a food consumer, this is my made-up short list of "secret ingredients" that might add depth/sophistication/intrigue to the taste of chili:
- cinnamon
- yellow ginger
- star anise
- bay leaves
- sumac
If anyone has tried any of the above, let me know how it turned out.
