We need a Venezuela thread

I have no idea but was charitably granting that their stated reason is the actual reason. I can’t be sure though. There seems to be more going on between the US and Venezuela than meets the eye, hence the thread.

I think a government can act on intelligence in international drug trafficking matters, that they don't want to process through domestic courts of law, when there's little to nothing to be gained by doing so.

The theory, which has no intelligent detractors, is that the administration’s position that anyone in these boats is an ‘unlawful combatant’, would not survive contact with a court of law.

I don't think survival is the point, amirite
Honestly I'm still surprised Trump didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize.

This past weekend Trump lifted sanctions on potash exports from Belarus. Last week Trump announced a 10% tariff on potash imports from Canada. The US imports 70% of its potash from Saskatchewan. It will now be able to import potash heavily discounted from Belarus.
Today Trump has claimed ownership of Venezuelan heavy oil production. Why would he continue to import tariffed heavy oil from Alberta?
Trump has already systemically dismantled the Canadian steel and aluminum industry and the auto industry in Ontario and Quebec. He is now going after the industrial bases in Saskatchewan and as of today, Alberta.
I attribute it to covetous malice.
