The typical cause of deflation is reduced aggregate demand from a recession but he doesn’t seem to be predicting that.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

He doesn't seem to be predicting anything but blue skies, rainbows and unicorns.

Why would that happen? Nice sentiment, but what are the mechanics, the market forces driving it?

More to the point, when has it ever happened?

        I was only joking

We had one month of deflation at the beginning of the pandemic and for a couple of months during the financial crisis. Before that I think you have to go back to the Great Depression to see any sustained price deflation. I don't know of any episodes in US history that weren't associated with downturns, though it is possible theoretically to have deflation due to a supply shock or monetary tightening.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

It's not the deflation I was questioning so much as it being coupled with economic recovery. Just how dumb does he think we are?

Maybe if drug prices drop 1500% it will average CPI below zero?

What do we think of the Chinese efforts to move the world away from the dollar as a mode of exchange. One thing I read is an effort to do a quasi-gold backed yuan. They also seem to be making friends with more nations as a certain President seems to be moving away from them.

New data released Friday showed inflation heated up in September to a pace not seen since January, according to the first dataset to be released during the government shutdown.
The September consumer price index showed prices rising at a 3 percent annual rate — up slightly from 2.9 percent in August and above April’s post-pandemic low of 2.3 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

You’ll get quite the windfall when prices all go down heading into next year.
