Ha it was posted on the “sweaty palms” subreddit. I had the same thought. That being said, he’s getting due credit for a long video without commentary, music, editing, or screaming.

Apparently, this camp was a regular Who’s Who for the politicos in Texas. A current Rep had 2 daughters at the camp, generation after generation of Lyndon Johnson’s family went there, Laura Bush was a counselor when she was in college, and more…

When i first realized where it was i checked how far it was from the LBJ ranch, which the boy and I visited 7-8 years ago. It’s not far.

No, Kerrville is very close. My ex-SIL is from there.

The death toll is currently at least 81. What a horrendous situation.

                  I was only joking

This is so incredibly sad. One can only hope that we do learn some things from this - and that we don't repeat this horror. I can't imagine the pain of the parents. A meteorologist from that area did a post where she said it had nothing to do with staff shortages. She suggested that a weather alert radio could have helped provide warning as there was no cell service, and the worst of things were happening so early in the morning than many might have been asleep. Second thing would have been rising water sensors with a siren. Neither would be expensive.

How about don't build summer camps in flood prone areas.

How soon do you think a movie will be made about Scott Ruskan, the "rookie" 26 year old Coast Guard rescue swimmer who's been in the headlines lately about being the rescuer on the ground helping save/evacuate like 150 kids? I'm guessing 2027, starring Glen Powell.

I’m thinking that’s a gross exaggeration of what he actually did. It makes it sound like he personally swam through the raging river waters to reach stranded campers… He was placed in the highground of the island and decided which of the girls clinging to trees was in the most danger and the rescue crews responded accordingly. I’m not trying to belittle him, either, but it was one cog in a huge machine.

Oh agreed. When I saw some headlines about how many people he saved, but then heard him talk (he's pretty humble and professional about it, kudos to him), it was clear he was organizing which people would be airlifted to the nearest LZ. A good effort, but agree it wasn't him swimming in the raging river dragging each person to shore.

Just verified with AI a story that sounded unbelievable - but the lovely people in that county in Texas were offered equipment to warn of flooding - and decided against it. Most of the surrounding counties went for and installed the equipment. Reliable reporting confirms that Kerr County, including the town of Kerrville in Texas, had long declined proposals for installing a flood warning system—even as officials recognized the high flood risk. One plan in 2016 called for a nearly $1 million system, and despite offers of federal funding, the county never moved forward due to a desire concerns primarily focused upon sirens

That flood system could have included outdoor sirens, gauges, and redundant notification methods. However, debates during the county’s commissioners court meetings included dismissive remarks such as preferring the status quo river‑camp “phone‑call” alert system, with one commissioner quipping:

“The thought of our beautiful Kerr County having these damn sirens going off in the middle of night…”

In short:, equipment that would have delivered warnings (sirens and monitoring systems) was proposed multiple times but ultimately rejected.
