Watching the speech... early on when the one older democrat wouldn't sit down and stop shouting (he was removed by the sergeant at arms) I thought we might see a coordinated protest by the left, kind of expecting some Serbian smoke bombs, but it settled down from there...

The speech so far is exactly what you'd expect. Lots of bragging, lots of lies, but also lots of policies I'm happy about. Trump is 100% in his element, he's enjoying this, lol. I have to admit I chuckled with this line. What President says "never heard of that country"? Hahaha (facepalm), "Eight million dollars to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho, which nobody has ever heard of"

I'm about 15 minutes behind, I'll be curious what he says about Ukraine.

He’s a great salesman. All the culture and border stuff plays well with normal people.

He positioned the tariff stuff as if America is just a victim that was finally forced to match unfair tariffs from others.

A lot of empty ra ra stuff, but he also broke a lot of hard news. America is going to be great again. That was good to hear confirmation of that. Biden was an awful president. Lots of debate about that, but we can finally put it to rest. I was surprised, pleasantly so, that he’s the greatest president ever. Better than Washington. Now that all of this is established, I look forward to more substantive conversations on TNCR.

I didn’t know Democrats don’t like black kids that survive cancer. That’s kind of sad.

I don’t think it’s a race thing necessarily. They just hate it when any kid survives cancer.

Apparently they don’t like catching terrorists that killed American soldiers. That’s kinda odd.

That’s so ironic coming from you.

Yes, Jolly, back when your people infested the Democratic Party it was the foul party.

Funny comment last night from Andrew Yang: “it’s leg day for the GOP”.

Presumably they were giving a lot of standing ovations.

What poll? The only recent one that I’ve seen for March is Emerson, and they have him 48-43, which is basically where he was in January with them.

All politics aside, since Trump says whatever he wants (he repeated many lies again, but they sound so good), it's not surprising folks who aren't aware they are lies like what they hear.

One of Matt Yglesias's 17 takes:

The decline in the stock market since Trump’s election is not particularly large or noteworthy, but it is genuinely extraordinary to see this kind of market reaction to a new GOP administration whose main policy ideas are to install business-friendly regulators and cut corporate taxes. You have to be making some extraordinarily bad trade policy choices to get that result. There’s been years of speculation that Trump’s trade instincts would be curbed by market reaction, but last night he presented himself as entirely undeterred and eager to levy more tariffs. An extended portion of this speech was dedicated to promising higher taxes on groceries!

                                        Education is extremely important.

I saw the same CBS poll that LuFinn saw, but other polls such as CNN's showed similar results. Amazing, for a two hour speech. Of course, it didn't hurt the Dems made literal asses of themselves.

Trump believes that jobs and economic prosperity are paramount. The tariffs issue, the emphasis on ship building, the AI initiative, energy production, etc., are all private sector jobs driven. My opinion is that Trump is willing to take a short-term market hit, if jobs can be created.

As for Ukraine, Trump has decided to end that war and it's up to Zelensky to decide how it ends. The Europeans can step up or bend the knee to Moscow. The U.S. have bigger fish to fry in the Pacific.
