    This will be interesting.

Complete destruction of trust for long term economic cooperation.

Trump saw it work with China, with the decoupling after tariffs and Covid supply chain issues.

Interesting that he’s using the same playbook on his “allies”

I’m old enough to remember when ‘business hates uncertainty’ was a common GOP refrain.

If you’re Canada do you have any choice but to invest in more pipelines to Pacific ports?

I remember when Trump threatened Amazon with increased postal costs. At the time, over 80% of the deliveries in our area were via USPS. Now, 100% of them are by Amazon.

And if Trump gets the Keystone XL built, that will mean more exports to world markets.

And Atlantic ports. There’s also Hudson Bay for six month’s of the year, maybe more with climate change and global warming.

And what if he does but won’t be able to tie into the line we built to the border? Pipeline is useless without product to ship.

Trump doesn’t want to resolve it. It’s pretty clear from his comments that fentanyl is there for the legal justification but autarky is the goal. Though at some point markets and inflation will force his hand.

As I mentioned in another thread. Trump has no compunction against pivoting and moving to a more market friendly position if he sees the tide turning against him…

He lacks the courage of his convictions at times. Feel free to make all the jokes that you would like out of that.

I think folks would forgive prices not decreasing - but increasing prices? - not so much especially when the layoffs come - so the twin pincers of higher prices and increased unemployment might shake even some of the faithful. Follow that with a stock market decline...

His winning margin wasn't from the faithful, it was from swing voters who voted for a better economy. Maga is toast if this stuff all backfires in ways they feel.

Autarky. An interesting and, for me at least, a disconcerting thought. The US would need unfettered sovereign access to a multitude of natural resources including fresh water to attain that goal.

Contrary to what John Bolton has said that Trump is incapable of a grand strategy, I cannot entirely rule out that a malevolent and imperialist design is what motivates Trump’s thinking.

If you’re Canada do you have any choice but to invest in more pipelines to Pacific ports?

I remember when Trump threatened Amazon with increased postal costs. At the time, over 80% of the deliveries in our area were via USPS. Now, 100% of them are by Amazon.

How many jobs did that create? Isn’t that a net win?
