Winds during JFK also were 20-25mph. Made it feel like 8 degrees. But he didn’t worry about crowd size.
And he gave his speech in just a suit coat!!
So many men in top hats. That was the end of an era. By the time Johnson had a proper swearing in in 1965 Ladybird was the one person wearing a hat.

As I look at them, the top hat isn’t a very good winter hat. It doesn’t even cover the ears. Give me my knit hat any day. (Like today, with the windchill of 6F when I shoveled my sidewalk this morning in anticipation of an early morning furniture delivery).

Yeah but by the mid to late 60s top hats were all but gone. Men would wear bowlers or fedoras or something else when it was cold out.
Alex, I'll take cowboy hats for one hundred, please...

That was designed to keep sun and rain off your head and neck. Not to keep you warm.
You must have never worn a hat. A good hat can make a good bit of difference in how warm you are.
There are several different custom cowboy hat makers out there. Some will mail you a measurement device, (George, it looks like a medical halo, but with more adjustable points) so you can do a remote fitting.
I think custom hats start in the $400 range, but a good one will cost more.

Wide Brim
- Purpose: The wide brim provides shade from the sun, protecting the wearer’s face, ears, and neck from harsh sunlight. It also helps shield the eyes from glare, which is crucial when working outdoors for long hours.
- Additional Benefit: In rainy conditions, the brim directs water away from the face and collar, helping the wearer stay dry.
Tall Crown
- Purpose: The tall crown traps air, helping to insulate the head and keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- Additional Benefit: It also allows for customization to fit the wearer’s personal style or regional preferences.

Maybe Trump can take advantage of a licensing opportunity, and sell gold plated ones for $50,000. Admittedly, the gold would be a terrible heat sink, but it would be reflective in the cold weather.
