Smaller SUVs?

The next couple days out here we will be shopping for a newer car for our daughter. Her 2017 GMC Terrain has been great, but it’s at 97k and will probably require some repair over the next 20-30k. She lives in the desert so I want her in a more dependable vehicle.
Any suggestions? I know we had a discussion on this a while back.

Little things. The lock and unlock button work when the doors are open. But the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob don’t. The button inside the car to open the trunk doesn’t work when the car is running, even if it’s stopped and in park, though the physical button on the back of the car does work if you’re in park, but only if the key is within a few feet. So I turn the car off for a minute to, say, drop my son off at school with his bass. And ten more things like that. Worse there’s no rhyme or reason to it. I can’t think of what the unifying paternalistic theory is behind it all, so it all seems random. I’ve had the car 3.5 years and I still don’t remember all the limitations so I rediscover them and re-hate the engineers at Mazda every week or three.

We took a family trip out to Chicago this summer in a rented Acadia…Liked it enough we sought one out a couple months ago car shopping for the Mrs. Turns out, they’ve gotten much bigger than since whatever model year the rental was, so we bought her a new Terrain. Looks/rides nice, lots of features for those that are into that stuff, etc.
Looked at the Hyundai Kona at the time too…but for her it was ‘too much’ on the techy side of things. So many screens, it felt distracting. (some cool features though)

My only experience with a Forrester was a good one. @Aqua-Letifer drove one about 20 years ago, it was a good road trip car. Which is a good test, I suppose.

Hey! We drove it to Pittsburgh to meet at that church key bar, I know we hung out with @LuFins-Dad , who else was there, Dewey I think?

Why will her Terrain need anything beyond maintenance? My 2014 Terrain is at 270K miles…
