What’s the science behind the lightening in the middle of the eruption?

Also. What was the total landmass that was wiped out in 30 seconds? That was unbelievable.

Volcanic lightning is an electrical discharge caused by a volcanic eruption, rather than from an ordinary thunderstorm.
