I'm more worried that the institution is falling out of favor altogether for a portion of the population.

    Could be.

First, a bit about Covenant Marriages:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covenant_marriage

It's not as crazy as many people think. Mandatory pre-marriage counseling and couples counseling when filing for divorce. Divorce timeframe based on certain factors.

Now, divorce in general...I think it goes along with good premarital counseling. Nobody is saying to do away with divorce, they just want to add a few more hoops... Counseling, a waiting period except in some cases, etc. Yes, it's probably a minority, but some marriages are better being salvaged...It's better for the individual and better for society.

            1. It’s a political nonstarter. It goes nowhere. No chance of succeeding.

            2. it actually damages the party. The blowback of this position drives more voters against the party, including some republicans.

            3. Even if by some chance you managed to succeed to get it through, the result will not be what you think it is. It will just result in couples forming even looser attachments.

This horse has left the barn and to pursue these policies at this point is utter stupidity

And I personally believe that marriage has been damaged and divorces are too easy, and that has had a huge negative effect on society. But I also believe Vox isn’t completely wrong on this one, either.

Personal relationships including marriage, is a state of mind between two people.

Pseudo-conservative and other sway backed busybodies claiming religious privilege should keep their God-damned noses out of people’s private lives.

Opponents of gay marriage have for quite some time used the argument that 'marriage isn't something the government should get involved with', and that it's primarily a religious undertaking.

Apparently, this is no longer the case.

If that was true there would be no headlines about this.

Marriage is something defined by and maintained by the state. Like anything else the majority elects legislators to deal with it.

And it is not something that was done to stick the government's nose into people's business. Marriage is something that is desirable for the state. Stable relationships and children are important to the state. This is an institution worth protecting.

Marriage also has a religious tradition that is important to many and non-religious people should keep their God-damned noses out of it.

See how well the idea is being received here? I’m sure it will be a big winner in the general public, though.

Just charge a nominal filing fee that is slightly more expensive than a typical new pair of socks from Target and already you would make it harder than changing your socks. There really is no reason to go the extreme of government overreach like outlawing "no fault" divorce to achieve your rather modest stated goal of making it harder than changing your socks.

But, really, as a freedom loving American, I would much rather the state stays out of the marriage thing entirely.
